Are there any benefits to running a lighter or heavier gear oil in a sports car?

Heavier Gear Oils are for Higher Gear Loads. The actual PSI on the surface of the gear or tooth face. Same with engine oils. Over the years auto manufacturers have been designing and specifying lighter oils and lubes to increase mile per gallon of gasoline.Are there any benefits to running a lighter or heavier gear oil in a sports car?
The main reason for changing the oil weight is normally due to running conditions such as temperature.





So if a hot climate heavier oil and colder lighter so it flows in lower temps. Now if using in severe duty such as always driving hard, pedal to the metal etc then a heavier oil would take the higher running temps better and not break down as fast as a lighter one.





Differences are lighter oil will flow better and run off after end of use faster than heavier. The heavier oil will hang on the gears longer after use. In cooler weather the heavier oil will take longer to get to operating temp meaning take it easy until everything has warmed up.
