Can old gear oil can be used for bike polishing?

One of my friends recently advised me that old gear oil frm motor bike can be used for polishing the bike.I have tested it on the chrome bits and it sure gives a shine. But i am a bit skeptical that it will ruin the glossy paint finish.

My friend told that it will keep the sun's rays away and the paint will remain glossy for a longer time.

Is it true. Can old gear oil can be used for bike polishing?
There are often bits of debris, including metal shavings in the oul that could damage your finish. Can old gear oil can be used for bike polishing?
Just use a good metal polish. Oil is for lubricating, not polishing. It will leave a residue on the metal which will come off on your hands or clothing.
Your friend is nutts. It will damage the paint over time, due to most all motor oil is asphalt based. Causes demarcation in the paint.
it will really make the bike ';shine'; when the exhaust heats up and the oil CATCHES ON FIRE and you go flying down the road on FLAMES !!!! what ??????
That's a bad idea, besides gear oil really smells bad.
the BEST polish you can buy is called ';BUFFALO MILKE';, yes its expensive but when you use it a tiny, tincy little bit goes a long way, i have been using the same 16oz bottle for 3 years and its still half full.

please take my word for it, shine ur bike with it and everybody will notice how it shines better than anything they ever seen.
that has to be the dumbestshit i have ever heard

it will help it slide better when you lay it down. what a goof.
Why do you change gear oil?

BECAUSE IT'S FULL OF GRIT AND DEBRIS!

Why would you risk scratching your chrome when the proper polish isn't that much?
NO DON'T DO IT. and if your friend polishes his bike with gear oil old or new he must be mental. A good quality car wax is all that is needed on the chrome as well as the paintwork.
