What type and how much gear oil should be used in a 1997 Harley Sportster w/ 883 engine?

All 5 speed Sportster transmissions hold 1 quart of oil. The old oil that was recommended was Sportrans, but they discontinued and went with a new version called Formula +. It can be used in Sportster trans, Bigtwin trans and primarys. Also you can use Syn3, Harley's full synthetic oil- can be used as a replacement of all oils on a Harley. All work very well as I use them in my street bikes and race bikes. I hope this helps. What type and how much gear oil should be used in a 1997 Harley Sportster w/ 883 engine?
No. The primary is the chain housing and shares the oil with the transmission. only add 1 quart of sportrans or formula+ oil. Your dealer is misinformed. It would be a good idea to purchase a factory service manual if you are going to perform your own services. Report Abuse

Harley Dealers used to sell stuff called Sportrans fluid.

I think they stopped and now recomend something like 20-50 Syn3 now.

You can get the Custom Chrome replacement stuff that is supposed to be just like Sporttrans was also.
look on your owners manual.
hypoid 80/90 gear oil 1 quart or 80/140 hypoid works either one
