What is the Difference Between Transmission Fluid and Gear Oil?

We had an issue, about Transmission fluid and Gear Oil, someone said you could use 75-90 Gear oil instead of Transmission Fluid in a Standard, International Transmission. I told that person Gear oil is not Transmission Fluid. Now he wants to know why? Can someone help me?What is the Difference Between Transmission Fluid and Gear Oil?
It used to be the same, 90w. Sometimes I used 140w for heavy duty applications.

Now days with closer tolerances and better oil many use the multiple viscosity 75-90w.

I think it's the same.

The people above are confusing ATF with manual transmission oil (fluid). What is the Difference Between Transmission Fluid and Gear Oil?
Automatic transmission fluid is a detergent oil that will help remove debris. It is a type of hydrolic oil. It is a lot thinner than gear oil and flows much faster. Most standard transmissions due use gear oil, not ATF. Ford Rangers and Explorers use ATF in their manual transmissions. Gear oil is very thick and can handle very high heat before it burns and needs to be replaced. ATF will get hot and boil to the point that it greatly expands and will leak out of any place it can find.

ATF and power steering fluid are the same.
In rare cases, you can use one over the other, but you never should. But for 95% of cases transmissions require a specific fluid the transmission was designed for. If you use the wrong fluid, it will damage your transmission.

Certain viscosities and chemicals make up specific fluids and oils and mechanical parts are designed to use specific fluids and oils.

So in short, gear oil is not transmission fluid.

Be careful, wrong fluid will end up in costly repairs.
I don't know why but my husband used transmission fluid in a part on the boat instead of gear oil because it is cheaper. He said it is the same thing just with a different pricetag. Whatever the difference is it didn't make any difference in our boat.
well because they are completely different types of oil. ones red (automatic) and the other is a clear beige color. which would be for gears. there are different types of trans fluid as well and you have to make sure you get the right one for your transmission type.
trans fluid is for an automatic, gear oil is for a standard
