Broken Dodge Durango transfer case, can I ditch 4-wheel gear and leave without oil?

I have a 98 Dodge Durango with the 231D HD transfer case. The 4 wheel drive gear (front wheels) has shot through the side of the transfer case. No oil is left in the case, as this is the low point. I was able to remove the gear from the transfer case for the front drive shaft and have two wheel drive (with hole in case). Since this is just a junk vehicle for me, I am not worried about heavy wear. Will the back wheel drive continue for a while or rapidly deteriorate?Broken Dodge Durango transfer case, can I ditch 4-wheel gear and leave without oil?

F150 leaking gear oil. Where do I fill?

I own a 1997 F150. I noticed the other day that my gearbox is leaking oil. I got under the truck and even looked around the top of the gearbox for a plug but did not see one. I do see two bolts that hold brackets onto the gearbox, but no plug. I am a terrible mechanic so please explain as simple as you can. Can I add 90 weight oil to this? Where do I add the oil? Thank you for helping!F150 leaking gear oil. Where do I fill?
First off, what are you calling a gearbox? If you mean the rear differential, not all of them have plugs.

Buy a Clymers manual. It will have pictures and explanations for everything.

Fix the leak. Nobody is a good mechanic until they dive in and start turning wrenches.F150 leaking gear oil. Where do I fill?
There should be a plug on the side of the gearbox and you fill to the bottom of that hole. You'll need a grease pump you can buy at the parts store. Look in Chiltons or any good auto repair manual to learn where the filler plug is. Fix the leak first.
Look for an allen type plug or a square drive plug these do not stick out as for the fluid check your owners manual for what type. Or stop in the local fast oil change shop and ask most will answer you.
there should be 2 plugs. 1 for checking and filling and 1 for draining the oil. i would say it takes 90 weight gear oil but some manuels take automatic transmission fluid.

Using hydraulic oil in a gear pump instead of the crankshaft can that be done?

Just thinking about the cylinder volume verses the volume of the 6in. diam. gear pump could turn the drive shaft 4 times per power stroke instead of 2 power strokes per 1 revolution of that crankshaft....making the system 8 times more efficient.....Using hydraulic oil in a gear pump instead of the crankshaft can that be done?
Hydrualic fluid and lubricants are different type oil and have totally different functios.Using hydraulic oil in a gear pump instead of the crankshaft can that be done?
If I understand the core of your question - what is going to drive the gear pump - magic. You seem to be asking if a gear pump could replace a reciprocating engine. Sure, but it doesn't help the situation since a gear pump is a secondary power source requiring some other source of power while a 2 stroke or 4 stroke is a primary source.

Do not drive the car until you have changed it to motor oil. Gear oil is way to thick and will plug cylinder walls
Gear oil is thicker than motor oil. One quart or less in with the rest of the other oil probably won't do anything bad. If you want to be sure about having only the right oil, change the oil and filter.

What kind of gear oil can be used in a jeep ax15?

SAE 75W90, with a grade of GL-5 or better. What kind of gear oil can be used in a jeep ax15?
DO NOT JUST USE ANY GL-5 OIL IN THE AX-15!

GL-3 is the correct oil - as specified in the Factory Service Manuals. The 97 FSM stated GL-5 but that was a typo.

Redline MTL or MT90 and Royal Purple Synchromax are generally regarded as the best oils for the AX-15.

GL-5 oils can contain sulphur based additives. These slowly eat away at the brass sycronisers in the gearbox and result in difficult shifting.

Some GL-5 oils do not contain sulphur. But they need to be fully synthetic and probably won't say on the container if they have sulphurus additives.

you are talking about motor oil right?

you should use 5W-20 4-5 quarts

check your users manual for amount of oil

(or put 4 quarts in and check the dipstick, put a few ounces in,

    check it again, etc)

    The Transmission - (5spd) uses 80w-90 (4-5 pints)

    The Engine - 30w (5 qts.)

Is it good for me to use engine oil in my transmission(gear box) instead of gear oil?

will this improve performance by givin more speedIs it good for me to use engine oil in my transmission(gear box) instead of gear oil?
Generally all of the prior respondents gave you good answers. However the damage you might do really depends on how you drive. Thicker oils do typically offer better protection for reasons stated earlier. For many years Chrysler manual transmissions used Automatic trans fluid in their manual transmissions. The advantage was easier shifting when cold. If your only driving short distances around town and your car sits for long periods between drives, the thinner oil won't hurt your transmission. On the other hand if you ricky race around, shifting like a mad man and /or drive longer distances where your vehicle builds up a lot of heat then the thinner oils become a negative and your risk of damage rises. Also, where you live makes a difference. In Phoenix I'd only use the recommended 80-90 weight oil. In Anchorage the thinner oil would be fine. To sum up the, potential damage you might do depends on your driving style and ambient temperature where you live. So while it may not be good for your transmission it is also not necessarily bad either. A word of caution here, If your car is under any kind of warranty or If your not willing to foot the bill for a premature repair,, stick with what the manufacturer recommendsIs it good for me to use engine oil in my transmission(gear box) instead of gear oil?
no, but some manual transmissions do call for engine oil, albeit most manuals call for 80-90w. automatics take dextron II.

never use anything other than what the transmission is engineered to accept, the weights they recommend provide the best lubrication and cooling possible

and transmissions don't give more speed. they distribute engine power to the wheels. more wheel speed comes with higher gear ratios
do it if you dont like your current tranny
I think that the engine oil is to thin and will not lube the gears like the transmission (gear oil) would do, and this would cause your gears to wear down faster
It won't hurt it. Heavy equipment uses regular 30 weight oil in their gearboxes. Its better to use 30 weight than nothing at all. Many new vehicles with standard trans comes from the factory filled with automatic trans fluid which is about as thin as 30 weight engine oil. It will not inprove performance by giving you more speed.
no. Gear oil has a much thicker viscosity than engine oil. to get more speed, you need more air into the engine. not in the gearbox.
This is a stupid thing to do. The transmission oil for a manual transmission is specially formulated for high stress. The only cars that ever tried using engine oil in the trans (MG,Austin FWD) had transmission failure before the cars had 10,000 miles on them. Use the oil that the manufacturer recommends, period.

The amount of drag caused by higher viscosity oil is absolutely negligible.
Absolutley not, do not do that!
gear oil is thicker (90 weight) than engine oil (around 30). This means it can take higher temps and is a bit better lubing the gears in that gearbox. Engine oil if overheated will break down and you'll be in a world of hurt.

I'd stick with the gear oil.
Nope... instead it will shorten the life of your transmission.

The properties of motor oil are significantly different from gear oil.
No. Gear Oil is thinner and can withstand the hotter heats that an engine transmission puts out in every day driving situations

im not an expert with oil types but when it comes to oil for your gears it doesnt need to be the exact recommended type,

it is used to lubricate your gears only if the oil is slightly different to what it should be its ok,

cheersIs gear oil the same as transmission oil, when it come to dirt bikes?
DO NOT use gear oil in the crankcase of a 2 stroke.

    It's to thick.

It will hinder the movement of transmission components and cause the clutch plates to stick, putting unnecessary ware on the transmission, because the clutch isn't fully disengaging from the engine.

Use what the manufacture recommends - 10W-40 motor oil
You should be fine with putting the gear oil in instead of your old transmission oil. They are basically the same thing. Companies market them differently but you should be fine as long as it is the same weight (or weight range). Going from 80W to 80W-90 shouldn't be a problem. If you have problems or have had good experiences with the Belray oil, you may want to continue using that.
there isnt to much difference but motocross bikes are under much more stress than an ordinary car . Personally i would take it back and get the right gear oil, then slap the guy in the face for giving you that oil.
I would use a good high quality synthetic gear oil like Mobil 1 actually. But that oil you have should be pretty much the same. It's just gear oil.
The gl-5 oil (Hypoid) will contain more sulfur that may mess with any brass parts in the trans.

    Gear oil in whirlpool washer?

I laid my washer on it's front to remove the leaking pump from the bottom (it is a whirlpool ultimate care II). I left it there overnight and noticed a puddle of gear oil the next day (maybe 3 - 4 ounces). Is there a fill hole to replace it? How do know how much? Also, how do I get the ';cover'; off of the machine so that /i am not attempting all of this work through the bottom? Thanks.Gear oil in whirlpool washer?
On your console there should be two screws. One on the left and one on the right. They screw in at about a 45 degree angle. These screws could be on the front of the console or on the rear console. Once you remove the screws you will be able to flip up the console. Now that the console is flipped up, you can remove the two clips holding the back on to the main cabinet. These clips are are brass looking. Disconnect these clips and the connection going to the lid switch. With these undone, you can now remove the whole cabinet. Just tilt the cabinet back and slide off. The reason your transmission leaked is because there is a tiny hole on the top of the trans housing and when you laid it on its front some of the oil leaked out. If your washer sounds normal during agitation and spin, your transmission is fine.Gear oil in whirlpool washer?

If my manual 1995 Nissan P/U is leaking gear oil ?
You fix the leaks then drain and refill with 75/90wt GL-4 manual trans oil. If you must fill to keep running please do not use rear end grease. Sometime the shifter rubber boot cracks and leaks oil down from on top rear of the transmission. Don't over look that leak. 2 wheel drive 4.25 pints and 4x4 10 3/8 pintsIf my manual 1995 Nissan P/U is leaking gear oil ?
if it is leaking oil you have a bad seal either the front or the back

the back you have to pull the drive line out the front you have to pull the whole thing out you can put more gear oil in but that will leak out too draining and replacing gear oil on a regular basis like the oil in your engine looses it viscosity

or it slippery ness over time of heating and cooling so you have to replace it annually once year depending on how much you drive if you don't fix it it will cost you see links below first two are from parts America third link is how much a rebuilt trans is going to cost you a new trans is way more than the truck is worth the gear oil does a number of functions it cools the gears keeps them from making noise and allows for smooth shifting and lubricates the gears if you let i continue to leak and do nothing your going to need a another trans, for the cost of the seals well worth replacing if they are leaking

when your truck dies and your planning on getting a new truck then don't bother when its dead your out thousands better off getting another truck

if you can't afford another rig you better replace those seals otherwise your going to be putting lots of oil in on a regular basis how to check when its full stick your finger in the hole to the fist bend on your finger make sure the truck is not running, you should feel oil on your finger at the first bend if don't its low but don't over fill it either that can cause it to leak out in the first place forces the seal out.

    hope that helps

I have '99 Toyota Camry, bought it year ago but never checked or changed transmission oilIs it necessary to change automatic gear transmission oil.?
You should check the transmition fluid when the car is warm and the gear is in neutral. After so many years it might be a bit low.

The filter should also be changed and refilled with fresh cherry juice. Is it necessary to change automatic gear transmission oil.?
Transmission fluid should be changed every 30-50 thousand miles no matter what car you have. It should always be light pink and clear not dark , dirty or smell burnt.
the filter is what really needs to be changed, but to get to it you'll loose alot of fluid so you need to replace that fluid using this method you wont get all old fluid out some service stations now offer a way to get all fluid out
yes you need to change the filter AND fluid. check the dipstick or manual to see whether it needs to be in park or neutral.

ford and chevy is park usually

    dodge is neutral usually

What will happen if gear oil put into clutch resevoir? does it needs to be bleed?

You will burn out your clutch because the gear oil is too thick to circulate throughout the clutch system. If you don't have any clutch fluid, the other best thing to use is DOT 3 brake fluid. That's the exact same thing as clutch fluid. The people at the parts store won't tell you that because they want you to spend more money on the clutch fluid. For example the clutch fluid cost about $7 and the DOT 3 brake fluid cost about $2.50 Well you can be the judge of the prices. If your still not convinced go to the parts store and open a container of clutch fluid and smell, then open a container of brake fluid and smell. The liquid in each container are all the same; brake fluidWhat will happen if gear oil put into clutch resevoir? does it needs to be bleed?
The piston seals will go soft and it will quit working in about a week or so.

    Drain, flush, and bleed.

Then cross your fingers. What will happen if gear oil put into clutch resevoir? does it needs to be bleed?
A clutch system if very close to a brake system. I've delt with this a few times. Oil in the resivor will eventually (usually withen a few days, even hours depending on the vehicle) will get althroughout the system and anything rubber will swell and kill off that part of the system, everything where the fluid has come in contact with will need to be replaced in sever cases. Have it flushed out as soon as possible, and if you're lucky, no damage will occure, but if its too late, all seals will absorb the oil and expand the seals causeing them to lock up the componats, or cause leaking, Either way, the system will no operate properly. Have it flushed ASAP and hope for the best, worst case senario, new lines, resivor and anything else with rubber or rubber like materials. This can get very expencive. In some braking system's i've done with ABS, its been in the low $3000 range. The clutch system is a simpler system, and without the ABS unit, that will drop the price a fair bit, but for a whole system, you may be looking at $500+ depending on the vehicle, maybe less. Its hard to say the damage, but if not flushed soon, major damage will occure.

there are several good ones out but the best would be either mobil 1 or castrol either one of these are real good they are the best on the market today
maxima mtl. i have been using it for about 10 years in my suzuki rm motocreoss bikes. and the lack of wear(check by mechanic) and how much longer a clutch last is unbeleivable. i run mtl 85 weight, it protects like a 85 weight yet is thinner than 5 weight oil. they make it in different weights. most of the peoepl here are telling you to use car/truck oil. you cant do that!! a kx uses a wet clutch car/truck oil containes friction modifiers and will ruin a clutch. use only 2 stroke motorcycle oil. in your crankcase., like maxima mtl.

    I bought bel-ray 80w 90 gear oil will that work in a cr125r 2002?

That's not actually intended for your app.

    Though it'll work fine.

The Single weight Belray Gear Oil is better for 2 stroke gearboxes,,,75weight

The 85w-90 is a hypoid gear lube with extra EP additives.

    It's roughly equal to about ';30w-50 Motor Oil';

The Straight 75 gear oil is approx eqivalent

    of ';10w-30 Motor Oil';

The heavy stuff is not necessary in your CR's box,,,and MIGHT%26gt;MAYBE cause a bit of clutch drag particularly when cold.

The trans will shift better and transfer a bit more power with the Lighter Oil,,,,and clutch's overall operation is usually better.

    ......................................鈥?br>

Most all Jap boxes are designed with using Engine Oil in mind,,,and 20w40 is a common specification.

    20w50 acts about the same

10w30 or 10w40 offers a slight improvement in clutch%26amp;shifting characteristics with no discernable difference in wear or load capacity

Straight Weight motors oils of 20 or 30,,,and even 40 weight are OK.

Above 40 weight there's risk of the drag penalty upon both clutch action and shift quality...except in extremely high temps such as desert racing in 100*++ weather.

    But,,motor oil is motor oil.

    It's made for motors.

I don't use it in transmissions ,primary drives,or clutches.

ATF,automatic transmission fluid is what I prefer.

It's made for Gears,,and Clutches,,and roller and ball bearings,,,and Higher Temps and heavier metal-to-metal loads.

Traditionally,,ATF was formulated with highest performance lubes known.

Since the ban on whaling,, modern synthetic ATF's have surpassed the performance of even the old whale-oil blends.

I always found it Odd,,the consumer resistance to using Transmission Fluid in Transmissions.

Engine Oils with their ';3~5,000 mile'; recco'd change interval,,vs ATF which usually NEVER gets changed and lives nicely in an environment which would destroy an engine in Minutes,,,or at least wear it out in a few hours.

Anyway,,,Yes,,Belray 80w-90 will do OK even if not Ideal choice.

Worst-Case is the POSSIBILITY of a bit erratic clutch action compared to what You're used to.

You may notice No Difference at all.

    Hope that helps

oil viscosity ratings are two different things.

Put it in until it starts to run out of the filled hole. You can't over fill it.Have a 97 mustang cobra, doing differential gear oil change, how much gear oil do i need?
Usually two of the pint containers, I think. But the fill plug is at the correct fill level. Put in a bottle, then see if you can feel the oil thru the hole. If not, put in another, until it either drips out the hole or you can just feel it thru the hole. There's also a 'friction modifier' that goes in with the oil, if you still have the factory differential.

Do you have to split the gear box to remove and replace oil sump pan on Ford Ka?

I have just dropped my ford ka 1999 at the garage as there is a hole in the sump pan where it has rusted through. The mechanic says that it will cost more because he will have to split the gear box to remove and replace the oil sump pan. Is this true?Do you have to split the gear box to remove and replace oil sump pan on Ford Ka?
    Not on a 1999 Ka.

On the later Ka (late 2002 onwards) with the 1.3 Duratec 8v / Zetec Rocam engine, there are a couple of bolts that you need to remove the gearbox to gain access to (one of the stupidest ideas ever). At least they have an alloy sump, so the only thing you are likely to need to do is replace the gasket if it leaks. This is also the case on the 1.6 engine in the SportKa and StreetKa.Do you have to split the gear box to remove and replace oil sump pan on Ford Ka?
    Hi

JG has told you the correct answer, there is no need what so ever to split the gearbox from the engine, changing the sump on a KA should take any good mechanic no more than an hour.
they are trying to rip you off.about 15 bolts hold the sump on to the engine and about 4 hold a plate onto the gearbox.a chimp could do this job in 30 minutes
I could be wrong, but I'm sure you can swap the sump without having to split the engine %26amp; gearbox. You just need to unbolt the lower plate between flywheel %26amp; gearbox.

Does the oil hole in Sturmey-Archer gear hubs also lubricate the bearings?

I am gradually repacking all the bearings in my bicycles with grease. However, I don't know how to do this with Sturmey-Archer gear hubs - is the oil that is poured in through the lubrication hole sufficient, or does it need repacking as well? Thank you.Does the oil hole in Sturmey-Archer gear hubs also lubricate the bearings?
Yes, use light machine oil in the hub. If you are adventurous and want to tear the hub apart, you may repack the outer bearings with lithium grease and lightly coat the gears inside with Vaseline/petroleum jelly before reassembly. You can then maintain the hub with a few DROPS of machine oil every now and again.

EDIT: Trevor... you didn't read my answer very well. FYI, Vaseline- PETROLEUM JELLY- is an excellent lightweight lube for close tolerance parts, not too good for bearings. Try it next time you rebuild an internally geared hub and be amazed.Does the oil hole in Sturmey-Archer gear hubs also lubricate the bearings?
The oil administered through the lubricator is for the gears only and does not reach the bearings except by seepage, the bearings can be regeased as on any other hub by removing the locknut and cone, see

    http://www.sturmey-archer.com/pdfs/AW_**鈥?/a>

Sorry to disagree with Mirageguitar again,(see seat post question) but do not use Vaseline, this is not a lubricant, not for gears in any case, and attracts dirt.
As always, Sheldon has the answer: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/sturmey-archer.html#lubrication

It seems that you don't need to repack your hub, and that you should use oil rather than grease to lubricate it.

Check you use Motor Bike Engine Oil as it is thinner than Motor Car Engine Oil.

Used oil does tend to turn black.

No way of knowing what oil or the amount without knowing what bike it is. Search the internet on google or get in touch with the bike dealer/maker.

Do not use car engine oil as it has additives which will ruin the clutch.

Different bike engines use different oils and different amounts.

The chances of you happening on someone on here that knows the answer are tiny - no matter how many times you ask
Your bike does not use any gear oil. As on most motorcycles the engine and transmission are built as a single unit and share the same oil. Use 10w30, 15w40, or 20w50 motor oil and change it regularly:both your engine and transmission will be fine.
I recommend a full synthetic 80w-90 gear oil. The transmission should have a separate fill plug on the side of the case. It is usually a bolt larger than the rest. Add the gear oil until it just starts to overfill out of this fill hole when the bike standing level on both wheels.

Changing the gear oil is about the easiest maintenance there is. The final drive has two plugs, a drain plug and a fill plug. Open the drain plug and let the fluid run, then open the fill plug to make sure all oil drains out. Reinstall the drain plug and fill the drive with the recommended gear oil while the bike is in an UPRIGHT position. Fill until the oil reaches the bottom of the fill hole. Screw in the fill plug and you'll be good for another couple of thousand miles. How do i get in to a on line service manual im trying to find out how to change the gear oil on my harley?

Weld an extension to the nut -

Then you can put a breaker bar on there and get it off.
Have someone weld a nut to the plug (easiest) or you can possibly use a hammer and a chisel to make the plug turn out.
a sharp blow from an air chisel may get it to turn just enough to loosen it

HEY DIYers and Gear-heads! Do you treat oil changes to your project car different from your daily driver?

nope I change my oil on all cars regularly at 6 months or 5K miles which ever comes firstHEY DIYers and Gear-heads! Do you treat oil changes to your project car different from your daily driver?
Since daily drivers are usually lower power and aren't run as hard as project cars of course you use better oil/filters in them. You can technically let your cars go for 5k miles without an issue with the oil but I would never let my project go past 3500.

I user synthetic 5w30 in my project with high performance filter and regular 5w30 with standard filter in DD.
no, why would i wait to change the life blood of either. the oil is what keeps my project running and my daily driver also. i am typically doing the oil change every 3000 miles. and every thing else is up to date also.
    Nope. Oil is cheap.

water in rad will be frothey.....oil will be white and watery...How would i be able to check if there is water mixing with the gear oil?
Yes the milky color is an indication of water mixed with oil. Also since water is more dense than oil it will go to the bottom of the case if it has not yet mixed with the oil. Maybe you can take a small sample from the drain plug and examine it. If you are not sure if water is in the oil put a drop or 2 on a hot exhaust surface. Water in the oil will sizzle, oil will smoke.
I Wud Say As Most Oil Substances.

    Drain A Bit Off Into A Beaker/Jug

    Hold Upto The Light/Sunlight

The Oil Wud Sit On Top Of The Water And Be A Visible Layer On Top, If It Has't Yet Mixed With The Water.

Other Than That, The Liquid Drained Would Be A Milky Colour.

    Hope This Helps

';gear'; oil or 'transmission' oil is usually individual for different makes of vehicles. Always use the one recommended in the Owner's manual. It should be changed every 75,000 kilometers

Motor oil is for the engine - different type of oil altogether and has a viscosity specifically for engines.. Motor oil should be changed every 5,000 kilometers for regular oil and about 8,000 - 10,000 kilometers for synthetic oil. That's right 80- 90 w gear oil.I don't know the amount it take's, but the way you check it is to find the plug that's on the side of the tranny about half way up .Now that you have found the plug unscrew it and oil should run out of the hole, if not start filling it up and when it start's to run out it's fill, put the plug back in and your good to go.

Don't be afraid to get your fingers dirty! Stick your finger in the oil hole! You should be able to touch into the oil! I will agree if she's grinding that probably is the clutch cable. How can you tell if your gear oil is full.i dont see a drop in it.the see through wind is dirty.?
the gear oil should be level with the bottom of the fill hole. fill it until it dribbles out the hole and its full.
Don't rely on the sight glass. Open the fill plug, which on many bikes has a small dipstick attached to it. Take a read off the stick. If there's no stick, take a small screwdriver and check the level that way. Look down the hole, if you don't see oil, there's a problem.

By golly , You are right , I can`t find anything either, must be a sealed unit. But on page 27 of the parts book it lists 15 oz of grease , so that would explain the lack of a fill hole . It looks like it is a one time thing. When the gear box dries up , you just get another lawn tractor.MTD Yard machines lawn tractor, how do I add oil to the gear box there is no filler hole?
The grease that goes into these transaxles is just regular chassis grease. The same stuff in your grease gun. It is put in when the transaxle is assembled and should never need servicing under normal homeowner use.

Is Spectro's Hypoid GL-5 80w-90 gear oil the same as any other Gl-5 80w-90 gear oil?

I need to get more and really don't want to drive 15 times the distance to pay extra at the cycle shop if I can get the same thing from Autozone instead. It's for my V-star 1100 if it matters.

ThanksIs Spectro's Hypoid GL-5 80w-90 gear oil the same as any other Gl-5 80w-90 gear oil?
Don't waste your money. Buy any GL-5 spec 80w-90 gear oil. ';Motorcycle'; oils are nothing more than a marketing scam. Your dealer recommends them because he makes a lot of money selling them, and the oil manufacturers love it because they can charge a lot more for them. This is doubly true for final drive oils. Shaft-drive bikes are not at all hard on their final drive oil. The cheapest oil that meets the manufacturer's specs will be completely up to the job.

I've owned shaft driven bikes since the early 80's, including one very high-mileage Voyager, and I have always used Wal-Mart or Canadian Tire gear oils in the shaft drive.

In the end, your owner's manual contains all the information you need. Notice that not a single owner's manual recommends ';motorcycle'; lubricants. The closest is HD that recommends using their own lubricants.

Is Spectro's Hypoid GL-5 80w-90 gear oil the same as any other Gl-5 80w-90 gear oil?
    2 thumbs up for Dani....

GL-5 gear oil is GL-5 gear oil, no matter who's name is on the bottle.

It's the rating that matters. All my bikes manuals have listed oil specs, not manufacturers, excepting HD (as Dani noted) because they want you to use their name brand.

I used the low-cost stuff from Autozone and sometimes Wal-Mart in my 4 wheel drive trucks. Their gearcases are worse on oils than any motorcycle driveshaft. One reason for my confidence in putting it in my Yamaha.

2nd gear grinding noise since gear oil change?

Recently I had my Peugeot 206 LX gear box mounts replaced and the gear oil was changed as part of the work. Things were fine for a week but then when changing up to 2nd gear when cold I get a grinding noise. After a few miles it stops and the gear changes are nice and smooth.

It's the wrong oil; the spec for the old pugs was 70w/80. Your owners hand book should tell you the correct spec.
Does sound like too thick an oil was used. It frees off as the oil warms up and thins out.
They may have used the wrong oil. Check your manual to get the correct oil specs and compare to what they used. An oil too thick can cause this problem.

Can i use mulit-purpose gear oil as Bar Oil for my chainsaw?

As a chainsaw owner (Husqvarna and Echo) it's best to use official chain bar oil because it will not sling off the chain when you're sawing really big stuff. Any Lowes (Husqvarna) or Home Depot (Echo) has their name brand chain oil. Many lawn mower dealers and major hardware stores has Stihl chain bar oil also which is excellent. All the above chain bar oils have the consistency of old fashioned STP, sticky as merry hell.

In my opinion you do have a good idea as gear oil is nearly as thick as chain bar oil plus it has a lot of EP (extreme pressure) additives which will save both your bar and chain. *Don't get caught dead using regular motor oil, new or used regardless of viscosity. It'll sling off the chain and will not protect the bar and chain as well as your plan. Can i use mulit-purpose gear oil as Bar Oil for my chainsaw?
if your stuck you can use anything that will lubricate it.. its not suggested because some oil will get sticky and funk up your chain..

  • A car does not enter gear. Could this be due to lack of gear oil?

This car could be driven by putting off the engine and then putting in gear and then starting. To change gear was almost impossibe. I have now tried to do the same by putting it in reverse and starting but the battery seems too weak. Now it will not even come out of gear even when the engine is off.A car does not enter gear. Could this be due to lack of gear oil?
I should get your clutch checked. It probably needs replacing, however i would suggest getting a mechanic to check it out. I once bought a new clutch and when the mechanic went to replace it he found that the clutch was OK but the thrust bearing was knackered. this caused similar symptoms to those which you are experiencing.

Good LuckA car does not enter gear. Could this be due to lack of gear oil?
Sounds like your gearbox is done for, or may just be the clutch, or lack of gear oil, take it to a mechanic or call one out, hope this helps.

sounds like the clutch has gone wrong put ingear in not good will ruin your starter cable snapped to clutch or slave cylinder leaking
it sounds like the clutch has gone. prob collasped clutch pressure plate
Check the clutch, starting simply by the clutch oil.
Sounds more like a problem with the clutch or the clutch cable. By the sound of things the engine and the gear box are not separating correctly as they should with the clutch.
The bearings in the box are worn so much that the gears are not lining up get a reco box or get it repaired.~~
Lack of gear oil may be one of the cause but it appears there are more serious problems with you car. get it overhauled with a good mechanic immediately.
Sounds like the gear selector forks are knackered - overhauled gearbox or new one by the looks of it - small (very slim) cahnce it might be out of oil but I doubt it.

As above could also be a clutch related problem

I have a 1978 mercruiser 120 hp what all get gear oil and oil in the transmisson?

Not clear exactly what your question is, but I'll take a stab. The ';transmission'; in your outdrive is more often referred to as a ';gearbox';, located in the ';lower unit';. It requires a 90-weight heavy gear lube. Make sure you get a ';marine'; gear lube, which will do a better job of maintaining it's lubricating qualities in the presence of water.

Your lower unit has a drain plug located a little lower than the propshaft, and a vent plug above the antiventilation plate, both on the starboard side. They are easily recognizable because they both accept a large slotted screwdriver.

Remove the drain plug, then the vent plug. The drain plug should have a magnet - a small amount of metal filings is normal. Let some of the oil flow over your fingers, look for metal fragments. If you see metal in the oil, the gearcase needs to be disassembled for inspection.

Both plugs have plastic (nylon) washers; some people use new washers with every oil change, but they can be re-used if you don't crush them when you reinstall.

If the oil has a milky appearance, it means water has infiltrated the seals. It's possible the source of the water is the nylon vent/drain plug washers. You might choose to just replace the washers, and drain the gearcase again after the next outing. If you have water again, the lower unit seals need to be replaced. Some people might advise to disassemble and inspect the gearcase - I don't do this unless I have symptoms of bad shifting, or find metal in the oil.

When you buy your gear oil, look for a plastic pump (about $10, BassPro, Cabelas, Academy Sports, some Walmarts, any marine dealer will have 'em). Screw the plastic fitting into the drain opening at the bottom, and pump until oil comes out the top. Insert the vent plug, remove the pump and insert the drain plug.

By filling from the bottom, you ensure that the gearcase fills completely with no air pockets.

The plugs should be seated firmly and tightened, but there's no need to apply all your strength - crushing those washers just makes them more likely to fail.

Change your gear oil every year. I do mine in the fall before the first freeze; if any water has got in, it *will* crack your gearcase open when it freezes.

Why is it so hard to find gl4 gear oil?

You are just looking in the wrong places. I can go to one of many auto parts stores in my area and find it.

The handbook will tell you. Alternatively a friendly Fiat Dealer (Spares Dept) will tell you. In any event you fill until no more will go in, then run the car around the block, let it stand then see if any more will go in. That gets rid of any air locks. But the Dealer info is easier.

Where do I put oil in for the gear shift?

I have a 1978 Mercruiser 120 hp... there is a box on the transmission behind the motor on the left hand side. On the side of the box it says to use 10w30 oil but I see no place to put the oil in. I want to know where to put the oil in and the proper way to fill it.Where do I put oil in for the gear shift?
You are probably just seeing a label for the motorindicating to use 10w30 oil in it. There is not really a transmission behind the motor before the transom. What you are referring to as the transmission is only a housing. It covers up the flexplate, engine coupler, and driveshaft. The transmission is built into the outdrive. Think of the outdrive as the transmission and the rear end of a car combined. To change the oil in the outdrive. First trim the drive until it is in a vertical position.Remove the oil vent screw ( large slotted head screw located on the upper port side of the outdrive) and the oil drain screw (located at the bottom port side of the unit). Let the fluid drain completely. Use lower unit gear oil (comes in a quart bottle that has a special tip on it to aid in adding the oil) and start filling from the bottom drain screw.Keep filling until oil starts to come out of the top vent screw(approx.2 quarts is required).Leave the bottle stuck in the bottom hole and take and re-install the top vent screw(This will prevent excess loss of fluid). Now pull the bottle out and install the bottom drain screw quickly. Remove the top vent screw and add oil until it runs out of the vent screw hole again...you do this because a little oil will be lost when you go to install the bottom drain screw back in. Periodically remove the top vent screw and top off the unit with oil.

By the way if this seems like too much of a hastle take it to a marina they will do it for about 40 bucks. Hope I have not confused you too much!Where do I put oil in for the gear shift?
First off, what are you trying to do?

Are you trying to check/fill the oil for your inboard engine? That should be obvious and easy to find on the engine block. There should be a oil cap on top or side (if V6 or V8) and a dipstick on the side. Some boats have a large enough bilge you can get under the engine and do the oil change the automotive way.

Are you trying to check/fill the gear lube for your sterndrive? (That's the part outside that has the prop stuck to it)

If so, then you first need to know the proper procedure to do it. If you don't do it right, expect VERY expensive repair bills.

Here is a web site that demonstrates the procedure:

    http://www.nitroowners.com/projects/lowe鈥?/a>

I recommend this web site if you are interested in doing it yourself, otherwise take it to a reliable marine service shop.

Otherwise, if neither of these two is the question you have, please post an update with more details on your question.
What you are looking at is the power trim pump not a transmission. To fill it make sure the drive is down.On the left side of the trim pump about half way down you will see a large

slotted screw.Remove it and fill with 10w30.The hole is small,

so I suggest you use a squeeze bottle to fill it.(A ketchup or mustard bottle)This will make it much easier to fill.I hope this helps you.
If its a manuel transmion you fill it from under the car you put it strait in the transmition and it will prolly take 80w90 gear oil if its an auto matic you can pour it strait into the spout the dipstick comes out. The one that says 10w30 is prolly engine oil.
