only in the differentials. Should not have to be changed often though. Some go near thier useful lives and never change it though i do not recomend that.

I have a 90's dodge van and every time it ideals in a gear the oil light comes on. whats wrong?

when the RPMs are under 2000 the oil light comes on after the engine is warm. the only gear that this does not happen in is neutral. i think it has to do with oil presser but i dont know to do or how to fix it. any ideas would help alot as i need to make a long trip soon.I have a 90's dodge van and every time it ideals in a gear the oil light comes on. whats wrong?
Make sure your oil level is where it should be? Then, check your oil pressure. This may require special tools. If you don't have the means of doing this, you may want to try thicker oil like 10w-30 instead of 5w-30 or SAE30 or 10w-40. Using thicker oil may compromise your fuel efficiency as well as engine operation. If your engine is making noise it may be oil pressure. If not, it may be a bad oil pressure sensor.

  • How often do i need to change my oil on my 97 banshee also gear oil?

You have 2 kinds of oil in your Yamaha Banshee

Premix oil and Gearbox oil. You should always use a good quality premix oil such as Yamalube Semi Synthetic 2-Stroke Racing Oil this stays suspended in fuel longer and gives great protection under extreme use conditions. Always use a mix cup for mixing your fuel/oil and mix at a Ratio of 32:1 in a 5 gallon container.Going leaner than this will give you increased engine performance as well as increased engine wear.hence the 32:1 ratio ensures maximum engine life when mixed correctly.

In the transmission of your Banshee there is separate Gear oil for the transmission gears. Again you should use a good quality oil such as Yamalube Transmission oil.

This is the same transmission oil the used from factory and it should be changed every 20 hours. How often do i need to change my oil on my 97 banshee also gear oil?
I would say every 3 to 4 tanks of fuel you burn.....change both when you change them.......remember oil's cheap repairs are expensive. Hope this helps. How often do i need to change my oil on my 97 banshee also gear oil?

While driving my '90 Miata, I smell gear oil when I come to a stop.?

a.) How do I check the fluid level.

b.) Is this common on a 18 yr. old car with over 200,000?While driving my '90 Miata, I smell gear oil when I come to a stop.?
Just because you smell gear oil, it doesn't mean you have a leak. I think you have got low on gear oil. You'll have to get under the car you will see a filler nut on the side of the gearbox, it's full of oil when it reaches the nuts orifice lower line. get gearoil with a fill tube attached and top up. better still, remove from underneath the gearbox, the drain plug (the old oil will gush out) replace plug and fill up with new oil. While driving my '90 Miata, I smell gear oil when I come to a stop.?
the dip stick is the same spedoometer cable yo have to pull out the cable and fill it until the oil came out the speedometer chamber

my suggestion take your car to pep boys or any quick lube and ask for the job
maybe u need to go tell someone until it EXPLOSE!!!
make your rear main rear seal is not dripping into the bell housing than leaking onto the clutch
Well have you checked your transmission oil? As your Miata has tranny oil and not fluid. You have to get under the Miata to check the tranny fluid level. If you do not have records or paperwork on when it was last changed, then I would recommend changing the tranny oil. My bet is your smelling old tranny oil burning and not your engine oil. Especially with a high mile Miata what do you have to loose?
You're probably smelling motor oil that is dripping onto the exhaust system. You really SHOULD keep your machines in better running order
It could be the smell is fluid or oil being burned on the exhaust, look for odd coloring or stains on the exhaust and it may lead you to the source of a leak.
Probably smelling your tranny fluid and or brake fluid if its happening when your stopping im not sure with miatas but thats what it would be to check the levels but thats just a thought on what it would be

How do i change the gear box oil on a corsa?

there is a grounding sound coming from my gear box i been told i nead to change the gear box oil as it might of gone watery and might not be working properly so i want to know how can i cange the gear box oil ??????How do i change the gear box oil on a corsa?
there should be a plate bolted to the bottom of the box, approx 10 bolts, you have to remove this and the oil will gush out.

the plate must be resealed and put back on then the correct quantity of oil needs to be added throught the breather on top of the gearbox.

if your unsure pay someone to do it, can get messy! How do i change the gear box oil on a corsa?
If you go under the vehicle there should be a drain screw, but before you do any thing make sure your transmission is serviceable, if you have a sealed tranny you be better of if a professional do it for you even if you have to pay a couple bucks!! Good luck!
Is Master Techs life that sad that he has to answer?

What gear oil weight do i need for a 2004 hyundai tiburon straight 4 version?

it depends if for transmission or drive axel!

How much gear oil do i put in a 5 speed manual trans and can i put it through the gear shifter, its already out

i'm replacing the clutch in a 95 jeep cherokee/4 cyl./5spd,How much gear oil do i put in a 5 speed manual trans and can i put it through the gear shifter, its already out
A general rule of thumb is to remove the ';fill plug'; on the side of transmission and pour in oil ';slowly'; till oil runs out the hole (into a pan on the floor). You will find the oil goes pretty slowly into the gear shifter (unless you have the whole top plate with the shifter on it removed).. When checking oil with everyhing together, it is common practice to insert your little finger in the hole, bend it down as far as you can, - remove finger, -- if it has oil on it (even the tip), then transmission is full enough!

If you have a ';Haynes auto Rep[air manual'; for your year and model Jeep, it will have capacitys listed. but this only means something when the transmission is fully drained. Also check to see that the transfer case doesn't have a different ';oil supply'; if it does you could have plenty oil in main transmission, and ';short supply'; in transfer case(if you have 4 wheel drive)! The manual will make life easier on many points, and well worth the money if you do all your own work!

Of course you do this with the vehicle sitting pretty much level in both directions! How much gear oil do i put in a 5 speed manual trans and can i put it through the gear shifter, its already out
Well you just fill it until the oil is level with the hole entrance you filled the oil through

If you observe the oil plug is not at the top of the Tranny, but about on the middle, this means you can only fill transmission oil maximum up to half of the entire transmission unit. Don't worry it is supposed to do that, for every normal engine the oil transmission is only filled up hal way, the idea is that once the tranny starts rotating the oil pushed by the gears movement will spread evenly to the whole tranny

Back to you question, well I don't own a Cherokee, but I do own a Toyota Land cruiser 4.2L V8, but I don't think there is much different in transmission oil capacity, well for transmission oil 3 litter should be more than enough.

    Good luck
you keep pouring in oil until it falls out of the filler hole. do not fill from the gear shifter, you might put to much in.
Since you have a 4 cylinder, 5 speed, you have an AISIN AX-5. There is a fill hole on the right (passenger) side of the transmission. Its a big plug, if I remember correctly I think you'll need around a 1 inch (may be bigger or smaller) wrench to get it out. Anyway, when oil starts to run out of this hole, then the transmission is properly filled. And yes, you can fill the whole thing from the hole where the shifter sits, I filled mine that way and it worked fine. Get fill specs for the tranny, I believe it is 7.5 qts of 75W-90 (that may not be exact but its close) and fill it up. Then go take the fill plug out and make sure it just runs out. Be careful and maybe check the fill plug a few times during filling the last 1/2 quart or so, just so you don't overfill the tranmission. Hope this helps.

What is the effect of wear on viscosity flash point, fire point of gear oil?

if we are using a four wheeler then what will be the effect of wear on the viscosity and flash point and fire point of the gear oil.whether these will increase or decrease with increasing wearWhat is the effect of wear on viscosity flash point, fire point of gear oil?
The viscosity of your base oil never changes. What does change and wear out is the additives in the oil which prevent foaming, rust and resist pressures from loads. These additives break down and wear out. If you run your gear oil too long or too hot then your mechanical components will wear out.

Flash point might be affected as the additives become depleted. If you are worried about flash points then a synthetic gear oil is your best choice and I would not consider using a petroleum based product.

What auto transmission gear oil did ford cars use?

    ATF is somewhat uni.

The older fords spec'ed type F, newer ones specs dextron/mercon. The dex/mer fluid can be swapped out with each other like dex/mer, dex/mer II, etc.

GM always spec'ed dex/mer for their trannys, but alot of high performance guys and racers in the 70's and 80's would use type F in their GM auto transmission cause it would give a harder shift between gears.

The reason for that is type F don't have as many friction modifiers in it as dex/mer does.

On the other hand, alot of ford guys would run dex/mer in thier ford auto transmissions that spec'ed type F, cause the dex/mer would help the trans to live longer, shift smoother, etc. What auto transmission gear oil did ford cars use?
type FWhat auto transmission gear oil did ford cars use?
You MUST know which transmission you have. For many yeas Ford only used TYPE F. When they began buying other car companies and outsourcing their parts manufacturing, that changed. You can find Fords that use TYPE F, MERCON DEXTRON AND MERCON DEXTRON II.

If you need to be sure, look up the transmission code on the ID plate for your vehicle and call the Ford dealer near you or a good auto parts store. IF you can not find the ID plate, Copy the vehicle's VIN # and then call either one, they will be able to tell you which digit identifies the transmission and then they can look up the correct information for you.

Gear oil dip stick shows hot and cold levels, what does this indicate.?

How often spark plugs to be changed (corolla 2002).Gear oil dip stick shows hot and cold levels, what does this indicate.?
The oil dipstick has two markings. 1 is for hot and 1 is for cold. These are used to determine accurate readings. The cold reading is used for when you have left your car for a long while and the engine has cooled down. The oil level should be at the full level of the cold reading. The hot level is used to determine your oil if you have been running your car. For example, you drive and stop at a gas station to check your oil. Since the car engine is hot, you cannot get an accurate cold reading. So hot is used which is usually a maximum fill line as the oil is being circulated and has expanded. In this case you do not want to go over the hot fill line. Hope this helps.Gear oil dip stick shows hot and cold levels, what does this indicate.?
Change plugs when dip stick shows cold!!

U know all mopes or bike are made by different manufactures, and yours is made with?? U did not provide a name of your cycle to tell you where to look,As I have had so many of them, they are located in different places. Ignore the comments on some of those who only say simple things and not mention where, when and how to do things,But next time, give an indication to what year, model the bike is, OK! Have a great week.
Call a local dealer or the web and ask the capacity of a 50cc.

The drain is on the bottom, probably a 19mm, drain and replace.

the fill port will be on top of the engine case usually on the right side, with scooter on center stand pull the bolt out, it may have a dip stick on it,But fill it with small amounts at a time.
You could look it up in the Owner's Manual, or you could get a device to drain the oil from the dipstick hole, yes, they make them for cars. But they work on two wheeled vehicles as well, and it would be better to do it this way, than not to do it at all.
take the plug out the bottom drain it then put it back in
most drains wil be on bottom and many have a plug on side of trans to fil thru

Help Changing Lower Unit Gear Oil In a Nissan 50hp Outboard Motor!?

I have a 50 hp Nissan outboard boat motor that i need to change the lower unit gear oil in and i am not sure how to go about doing this any help would be much appriciated Thanks!Help Changing Lower Unit Gear Oil In a Nissan 50hp Outboard Motor!?
On one side of the lower unit there are 2 screws. The drain screw is on the bottom of the front of the gearcase. The vent screw is near the top of the lower unit.

Trim the motor all the way down. Place something under the lower unit to catch the oil. Remove the drain screw then remove the vent screw and let all the oil run out.

Check the oil coming out for any type of metal chunks or large shavings. If the drain screw has a magnet on it it is normal to see some small metal shavings.

After all the oil has drained out screw the tube of oil or oil pump hose, whichever you have, into the drain hole. Fill the lower unit with oil until it comes out of the vent hole.

Next put the vent screw back in making sure the on the screw is in good shape. If not, replace the seal. Then unscrew the oil tube or pump hose and quickly put the drain screw back in. Again, before putting the drain screw back in check the seal.Help Changing Lower Unit Gear Oil In a Nissan 50hp Outboard Motor!?
BJ and JRAY answered this correct .... Just have plenty of paper towels on hand it can be messy! Also have extra lower unit oil on hand in case you have problems extracting the lower fill kit and replacing the orig screw.
There are two screws on the lower unit. The top being the vent and the bottom being the filler screw. Have a pan large enough to catch all the oil that drains out. You will want to inspect this oil for water and sign of metal flakes as that could be a sign of some damage. You can buy a kit that will pump the oil from the lube container into the bottom screw hole. Also be sure you buy the lower end lube that is specified for your outboard motor. After the lower end drains for about an hour, connect the kit tio the bottom hole and pump the oil in until it comes out of the top hole. Then screw in the top screw firmly. Quickly remove the filler kit and quickly insert the bottom screw and tighten it securely. Once you have cleaned the grease up you should be set to go.

gear oil is different from engine oil, gear oil is heavier and is designed to lubricte gears and engine oil is designed to lubricate bearing and bushings. Get rid of this oil!!!!!

It is not made to run in an engine.

Change your oil and filter immediately!!

Change it again after a weeks driving.
if you put it in for engine oil, get it out! gasoline in oil will cause sludge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DO NOT DRIVE IT UNTIL YOU REMOVE IT.

AND GET RID OF THAT BUDDY, HE DOES NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ENGINES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You should probably insure your ford ranger for fire.
Change your oil before you drive it again. Use 10W30 oil. Drive it about 500 miles and change your oil again. Use 5W30 For the second oil change. Change the oil filter both times. Finally Change oil and filter after 3000 miles Use 5W30 substitute last quart with Lucas Oil engine treatment and you should be good. I have gotten over 400,000 miles on a 1988 ford ranger p/u using 5W30 plus Lucas every 3500 - 4500 miles, without any major repair problems.
Drain the oil change the filter and refill with the right oil and run it awhile and do what i just said a 2nd time

  • What brand of gear oil would you recommend for my Toyota with 100K miles on the trans?

By gear oil I am going to assume you mean automatic transmission fluid. I am not aware of any differences between the brands. But, I am wondering why you need it. If you have a leak, consider an additive that swells the gaskets and seals to reduce or even eliminate the leak. If you are planning to change the transmission fluid, be aware that Toyota says that under normal conditions, there is no reason to change it. It does not wear out. If it looks very dark and smells burned, due to having towed something huge or getting stuck in the snow, then change it. Otherwise it is just a waste of money. If you mean gear oil as in manual transmission, again brand is not an issue and just use any appropriate weight gear oil (80W or 90W, check the manual). What brand of gear oil would you recommend for my Toyota with 100K miles on the trans?
For a car with 100k on it, I'd recommend switching to a good synthetic gear oil (manual transmissions only) such as Redline, Mobil 1 or Royal Purple. The consumer type stuff form Castrol and Valvoline would be OK too, but it just isn't the same quality as Redline and Mobil 1

For an automatic transmission, any higher-mileage ATF would do quite well. And contrary to what was said before, it's not the oil that wears out, it is the additive package that wears out. This is why car manufacturers recommend changing it out at set intervals, stated in your owner manual. Most are usually 30k or 60k, depends on the manufacturer's care guidelines.

Does a Toyota Camry 1997 automatic model require a gear oil check? And if yes, how often?

All Camry automatics have ATF in the differentials. The oil in the differential in the 4 cyllinder is separated from the transmission and has to be checked separately from underneath. It should be drained and refilled every 30,000 miles. I probably wouldn't worry too much about checking the level more than every 10,000 miles unless I saw a leak out of an axle seal.

The V-6 differential is connected to the transmission and does not have a functioning separate level check. You check it with the transmission ( every oil change) and change it with the trans every 30,000 miles.

    Hope this helps.

God Bless!Does a Toyota Camry 1997 automatic model require a gear oil check? And if yes, how often?

How do i check and add gear box oil in a bmw 328i?

i have a '96 bmw 328i and it is running really rough at the moment. it is idoling quite rough and tends to take a while for decent acceleration to kick in. i'm thinking that this is connected to the gear box and want to check the gear box oil but i'm not sure where to look. i'm also open to any other ideas of what may be causing this problem. thankyou to anyone who can help. i need as much as i can!!!!!How do i check and add gear box oil in a bmw 328i?
^^^ People should not answer questions if they don't truely know the answer (first answer) ^^^

You have to put the car on a lift and take the transmission fluid bolt out and the fluid should be up to the hole but not over-flowing. It's a weird thing about this car that there isn't a way to check it easily.

Take it to a BMW shop, autozone can only read codes, BMW shops have equipment to tune the engine through the ECU. They can see all the details of the engine, which cylinders are running lean/rich, voltage, cyclinder effiecientcy, you name it. You might need to have your adaptations reset after they fix the problem. How do i check and add gear box oil in a bmw 328i?
well if you have an automatic trans just pull the dip stick and check it should be the one near the back there is lines on the bottom of the stick and if it is low it is pints not quarts and you have to do this after you drove the auto for a wile it has to be warm to get a proper reading if you have a maual gear box you a dont have to warm it up just look under the car there is a bolt that goes in the trans about half way up un screw it and stick your finger in it you should be able to touch the oil in there but your problemb probley is not the gear box just sounds like you need a tune up thats all or one of your sensors could have gone bad there is a good chance of that hope this helps sincely josh
Your idling problem has nothing to do with your gearbox, have your computer read at autozone or a tuneup shop to have trouble code read, It is most likely a MAP sensor or an exhaust sensor. Autozone will tell you for free the tune up shop will charge you.

Is the vent screw for putting gear oil in the foot of my outboard motor?

30 hp marinerIs the vent screw for putting gear oil in the foot of my outboard motor?
Yes it is, if your changing the gear-oil you will need two tubes of (Hi-Vis 90 weight) gear oil. First take out the lower gear-case screw then the VENT screw and drain the oil out. This must be done with the Motor in the upright position.

To refill put the oil in through the lower gear-case screw until it starts to flow out the vent screw, now put in the VENT SCREW FIRST this will stop the oil from flowing out the lower screw hole, then quickly replace the lower screw.

NOTE: Check the screw gaskets (washers) and make sure there in good condition.

It's that easy this should be done once a year usually before winter storage to make sure that no water has leaked in, which could freeze and crack the gear-case (lower unit) . Happy boating.

P.S. I stand corrected and thank you ss350 you are right about using (Hi-Vis OIL). Guess my head was up my Ying-Yang for a moment there.

    Where was I !!

Will edit my answer. Is the vent screw for putting gear oil in the foot of my outboard motor?
While paul is correct about the gear oil change procedure, I would check on the choice of oil. As far as I know Type-C oil was for the old electric shift units. I think your 30 mariner should use High-Viscosity 80/90 outboard gear oil
Paul is right on the money. Take special notice about the washers he is talking about. If they arent on the plug when you remove it be sure to dig it out of the hole and replace it with another one.

the guy above is an idiot

    a CVT

    yes there is cogs

the cvt referres to the bit before the cogs

if you look at your bike you will see the transmission

now by the wheel by the transmission there will be either two or a number of nuts, one might even say the type of oil in it!

first you need to undo the nut the is at the bottom and drain it out, once it has done

    put it back on,

further above there should be another bolt hole, refil in that one until it starts to drip outWhere are the fill and drain holes for gear oil for a scooter (Tomos Nitro 150) with a cvt transmission?
hard to find, aren't they.... the link above is good, different scooter in the youtube, but still applies. on the tomos nitro 150, the drain bolt is the lowest on the left side of the scoot,

under the tranny, you'll see a small raised metal area just in front of it, to protect it.

if you picture the drain at 6 o'clock, the fill is at about 4. it's one of the larger bolts.

if you're uncertain, I can get a photo to you. good luck
ummm, it has a cvt transmission..... belts, no cogs.... no oil,

being a 4stroke it takes engine oil though

When changing the rear diff gear oil in a 99 Jeep cherokee,is it need to put friction modifier in also?

the jeep has 86000 miles. what will happen if no friction modifier is added? When changing the rear diff gear oil in a 99 Jeep cherokee,is it need to put friction modifier in also?
If it has ';limited slip';, posi, AWAL, other names pertaining the ability to spin both rear tires at the same time, you will need p/n 4318060AB additive. Your local dealer can run your VIN and tell you if it is built with that. When changing the rear diff gear oil in a 99 Jeep cherokee,is it need to put friction modifier in also?
If you want to know if you have a limited slip rear end, jack both rear tires into the air. Transmission in park or in gear. Try to turn one wheel..If the other wheel turns in the opposite direction, you DO not have limited slip. If it won't turn or you put the jeep in neutral and both turn the same direction, you have limited slip. You do not need the modifier for non limited slip. If you have it, you can do as suggested above and go to the dealer or the additive is available at any good parts store. To answer your question, if you do have limited slip and do not put the additive in, the rear end will make a poping noise as you turn sharply and QUICKLY wear out the clutch packs. While you have it open, look closely at the spider gears for wear.

    Good Luck
you should call the dealer and see what they say ..i'm sure if it has a clutch posi in it that it will need a synthetic gear oil or posi lube
You'll need a friction modifier in any of your axles only if you have either a locker, a limited slip or any other differential device other than an open carrier.

In the uk what is the equivilent of motul gear 300 gear oil ?

I am after the equivilent to motul gear 300 gear oil and a good two stroke performance mix oil for a kx85 and what ratio ?

ThanksIn the uk what is the equivilent of motul gear 300 gear oil ?
You don't have to use a gear oil, unless thats what you prefer. I've used Motul E-Tech 100 in my transmissions on both 2 strokes and 4 strokes for years. Good stuff.

I also use thier 800T 2 stroke oil mixed at 50:1. Used it in my sons KX's from the 80 up to the 250 he's on now, as well as in all my KTM's. More good stuff. In the uk what is the equivilent of motul gear 300 gear oil ?
    no idea
    67 kiloratios anon oft.
I always use the silkolene brand for 2 stroke oil, there are many types, I would suggest silkolene ';race'; comes with a red label.

Gear oil in the UK is normally classed into 2 main types EP80 for general use in motorcar gearboxes and EP90 for axels. some cars like the ford mondeo use synthetic gear oil its red, not sure of the code for it though.

If your looking for gear oil for your motorcycle. you can use normal engine oil 20/50 or 10/40. or EP80 if you wish.
    its 90-140

Can I use 80W-90 gear oil to replace 85-90 that is called in the user manual?

    hi

    I have a 50 cc scooter.

In the user manual it ask for 85-90 gear oil for the winter.

However, I can not find it anywhere.

The closest one I can find if 80W-90.

I am wondering if anyone out there know will that work?

    thank you

Can I use 80W-90 gear oil to replace 85-90 that is called in the user manual?
80W-90 is fine; thinner is better than thicker.

However, if you're going to the extreme to change the oil (most people don't bother with it), then just drain the old oil, dispose/recycle of it properly, and leave the scooter until the spring, at which point you add new oil.

BTW, any decent automotive or hardware store will carry your oil. Bring your manual when you ask them. Can I use 80W-90 gear oil to replace 85-90 that is called in the user manual?
I do not think that this would be a problem. The difference in viscosity is so small, it is most likely insignificant. The 80W-90 is slighly more versatile in it's range then the 85-90, it has the same high heat resistance the ';90'; , but ';slightly'; thinner (a little more lubrication range) going down to 80. The ';W'; represents that it can handle winter temps.
probably not. are you sure it's not 75-90 that is called for? it's much more common.

typically it's a GL5 whereas the 80-90 is a GL4 meaning there are friction modifiers in it that are not in the 80-90. you could wear out your gear box in short order like that.
yes cindy 80 gear oil will work,as a rue of thumb in a cold country

at winter time a small engine wil perform much better using a thinner grade of oil so the 80 will be fine and if in a hot country you can put 90 in ,drive safely, fron ron hughes the car doctor
Yes, it will just arrive in the engine faster.

Yes, of course- those recommended are always like subsidies to the dealers. Just pick a good brand and stay with it.
