Does a Toyota Camry 1997 automatic model require a gear oil check? And if yes, how often?

By gear oil check I'm assuming you're referring to the transmission fluid. This type of front wheel drive vehicle will never require you to check gear (differential) oil.

In regards to the transmission, yes it does need to be checked. It should be looked at every 15k miles or so. This is not something you need a mechanic to do, simply pull the transmission dipstick and inspect the fluid. It should be red to dark red in color and feel slippery to the touch. If it's rough to the touch or brown/black in color you have a problem.

In most cases checking the trans fluid will not prevent a problem from occurring. It will only notify you when there is one or about to be one. Servicing the transmission properly is key with any vehicle. Depending on how many miles you have you may want to consider having it serviced now. A typical service will include draining all fluid, purging the system, replacing the filter, and refilling with fluid.

This comes with a disclaimer of course. If you have a high mileage car (120-130k+) purging the system can be dangerous and can actually cause failure. If this is the case ask for the the system to be drained, filter changed, and that it's....no back flush or purging involved. Many mechanics/shops will refuse to service a high mileage transmission or require you to sign a complete release of liability in case of failure. New fluid means new detergent which can break up dirt/debris and clog the fluid passages causing slippage, overheating, etc until complete failure.

Bottom line, if it's not broken don't fix it...check the fluid level, color, and consistency from time to time.

Hope this helps!

What type and how much gear oil should be used in a 1997 Harley Sportster w/ 883 engine?

All 5 speed Sportster transmissions hold 1 quart of oil. The old oil that was recommended was Sportrans, but they discontinued and went with a new version called Formula +. It can be used in Sportster trans, Bigtwin trans and primarys. Also you can use Syn3, Harley's full synthetic oil- can be used as a replacement of all oils on a Harley. All work very well as I use them in my street bikes and race bikes. I hope this helps. What type and how much gear oil should be used in a 1997 Harley Sportster w/ 883 engine?
No. The primary is the chain housing and shares the oil with the transmission. only add 1 quart of sportrans or formula+ oil. Your dealer is misinformed. It would be a good idea to purchase a factory service manual if you are going to perform your own services. Report Abuse

Harley Dealers used to sell stuff called Sportrans fluid.

I think they stopped and now recomend something like 20-50 Syn3 now.

You can get the Custom Chrome replacement stuff that is supposed to be just like Sporttrans was also.
look on your owners manual.

How much gear oil goes in a 9'; inch Ford rear end?

It's out of a '70 Mustang Mach 1How much gear oil goes in a 9'; inch Ford rear end?
My manual calls for ';5 pints';, IE 2 and a half quarts. If you have traction-loc then call it 2 quarts plus a tube of friction modifier. If the rearend is new/rebuilt or getting a replacement differential it will hold 5 pints. If it is just having it's oil changed then almost a pint will still be in there, so 2 quarts.

1967 and earlier rears had filler plugs on the rear housing, later ones had them on the differential. Many times over the years has someone mated a ';late'; housing to an ';early'; differential and discovered they had no fill hole. And then there were lucky folks who swapped the other way around and ended up with two fill holes.

The old racer's trick to fill one of these was to jack up one side of the car, pull the axle and just pour the lube down the axle tube. Put the axle back in, etc, and you're good to go.How much gear oil goes in a 9'; inch Ford rear end?
Bartzan 4 is a Moron. Ford 9'; dont have covers. Report Abuse

just fill it up until if comes out of the fill hole. You cant over fill them.
if there is no hole, just get an aftermarket cover. They make some nice looking aluminum ones, and they have fill holes in them.
once you start to fill it and it starts oozing out of the fill hole, that's when you know.
The fill hole is on the front drivers side of the chunk. You'll need to use a 3/8 ratchet without a socket to get it out. If i recall, about two quarts will do it. You'll need to know what kind of differential you have, a limited slip will require lube made for it. Good luck.

What is the correct procedure for changing the lower unit gear case oil on a Honda BF130A outboard?

That is the better way, but you probably are thinking ';I don't have a pump'; No problem, use the oil in tubes and squeeze in through the bottom hole. You can also fill from the top hole, BUT....You have to allow time for air bubbles to work their way out.

Which ever way you go, re-check the level after about an hour or so of running. What is the correct procedure for changing the lower unit gear case oil on a Honda BF130A outboard?
Put a pan under lower unit to catch old lube. Remove the drain plug at the bottom of the prop shaft housing, then remove the vent screw located on the side of the housing about 6 to 10 inches above the prop shaft. Let the lube drain out completely, then pump new fluid into the lower hole and fill till it comes out the upper vent hole. Insert the screw into the upper vent hole and tighten while keeping the filler tube in the lower hole. Then remove the filler tube and quickly insert the lower drain plug and tighten. Clean up the oil off the lower unit and dispose of the old oil properly.

VERY IMPORTANT - make sure that you do not lose the washers (Rubber or plastic) off either screw when putting them back in.

Good luck!

Gear oil change necessary or not?

I have a 2005 Scion TC and it has 66k on a 5speed MT. I had my car at the shop and the guy suggested I change my gear oil based of my mileage.

Does this make a huge difference in shifting/driving?

Is it worth it to change it?Gear oil change necessary or not?
OK, I'm not a mechanic, but EVERY time I get an oil change (crank case) they ALWAYS tell me I need everything else chaged too. (transmission, front differential, rear differential, transfer case... it's a 4wd).

They also want to flush your radiator and everything else.

So I ask myself, have I EVER EVER EVER heard of someone's car dying because they didn't change their transmission oil? Have I ever heard of a rear differential dying for lack of oil change? What's your radiator gonna do, just fall out on the ground cause you didn't hook it up to that stupid pressure machine? Oh please!!!!

I would say that if you're not griding the gears all the time then don't worry about it. Worst case scenario, change it once during the life of the vehicle, which maybe fits your situation at 66k miles. But are you even gonna keep it for it's whole life? Really, they just love to scare you into doing things that you don't really need.

They'll still tell you to change the crank-case oil every 3000 miles when many manufactures don't even recommend that any more. I think its probably OK to go 7 - 10 thousand in most modern vehicles.

But Like I said, I'm not a mechanic.Gear oil change necessary or not?
Keeeping on top of fluid changes is going to increase the life of any mechanism, if you live in a city and do constant stop and go driving, changing the gear fluid on a yearly basis is`nt a bad idea and will add to the resale value of your vehicle.

Replace with synthetic fluid, you may not notice any difference in shifting, thats more to do with the transmission, your tranny may be computer controlled it decides your shift points, changing gear fluid may quiet your differential greatly.
Yeah it's probably a good idea to change it. Sure can't hurt anything. Just have to say I've seen cars that never had a gear oil change that never had a problem. The newer transmissions use thinner lube than the old ones did though so probably are a bit more sensitive to change cycles.
Bullcrap.... that stuff NEVER goes bad. You can change the filter/ fluid in an AUTOMATIC transmission and you need to add 5 speed SAE80-90 when it's low but anybody that wants to change that stuff is either: A. A fool; B. A crook; C. An obsessive compulsive clean freak or D. A naive person that believed some crap somebody told him Edit: Fine, you people want to throw your money away on useless crap...send money to me.... give me a break, ';difference in shifting'; yeah, it's SOOOO difficult to shift !
just add and drain really ive never change any of the cars id had and ive had some pretty old cars ..... but adding new fluid couldnt hurt if you got the money why not... but its not a have to thing just long as you have it check and its full is all you really need... and no you will not know if its been changed or not
yea it wouldnt be a bad idea to change it, but i dont think you have to change it too often. it breaks down too just like motor oil, but rear end grease and tranny , it doesnt break down as fast as motor oil.
you won't see any different in shifting but the rearendwill oil last longer oil is cheaper than parts and a lot easier to install.
You MUST change it.........unless you want your gears to start ripping apart.

it should be around 750ml but dont take my word for it. There should be either a sight glass or a level bolt just down near the casing but if not look it up either in your manual or do a search on the web. The oil ive been using in my bike (1999 rm 125) is motul transoil expert and it runs pretty well on it, basically a synthetic oil with a viscosity of about 10W-40 should do the trick and just stay with the good brands such as silkolene, motul, maxima....stuff like that. What is the Gear Oil capacity fo a 1999 Honda CR125?

When should i chage the gear oil?

i am using a Chevrolet Epica (55,000 KM)

    Could anyone tell me

1.When should I change the gear oil?

2.What are the things i need to taken care monthly or based on mileage? When should i chage the gear oil?
Most cars should have oil changes about every 2,000 to 3,000 miles. Some things u should keep in mind for monthly maintenance is to make sure that you check all fluids in your car and check the tire pressure on a regular basis. Also around the time u get your oil changed, I would recommend getting your tires rotated as well as having your brakes inspected. Love your car and it will love you back. When should i chage the gear oil?
Depends on the type and recommended interval I would say at least every 50000 for manual and 30000 for automatic.
oil changes are cheap insurance, check owners manual
    every 100 000 km

Rear diff - 90w use a friction additive as well

    T56 - uses ATF
you use dexron transmission fluid for the tranny and 90 weight for the rear differential on it, all car makers have just about changed over to tranny fluid on the standard shift cars it cools and lubricates a lot better than the thicker stuff does, good luck with it.

Spark plugs aren't weak, coils are.
You can get away without changing gear oil for many years and miles in most cases. See your car manual for all maintenance requirements. Don't trust what you hear on the web when you can simply read your manual and get the manufacturer's answer to your questions. The spark plugs in newer cars can last 100,000 miles in many cases.
you need to give more info to correctly answer this question. without knowing what type of vehicle/engine you are talking about nobody can accurately answer, as there are too many different types of engines and or vehicles. not to mention how you use it

i have a renault megane sceinic 1.4l 2002 plate.do i check the gear box oil with the dipstick or is it seperate from the engine oil?How to check gear box oil level on sceinic?
It will be separate from the engine oil, I don't know this vehicle but some manual trannys have a small dipstick that you may have to look for the are often buried down lower, if not then getting underneath and checking it by unbolting the oil level cap on the side of the tranny is your only other optionHow to check gear box oil level on sceinic?
The gear box oil is definitely different from the motor oil. There should be a plug on the side of the gear box if the oil runs out when you remove it, the level should be fine. Check the manual for the type of gear oil to use, it is usually 80 or 90 weight.

Dawn dish soap with no water, put a little in your hand and rub, then use paper towels to wipe dry. I use it in my starter and alternator shop and it works very well, not to mention cheap!
Why not use latex, rubber gloves or mechanics gloves and stop the grease from getting on your hands in the first place. I have used shampoo with very good results. It removes grease from your hair.
Dawn dish soap works great especially if you are washing the dishes too, because your hands soak in it. They use dawn to clean up oil spills on the road too.

What is the purpose and function of motor oil. What is the purpose and function of ATF and Gear OIl?

Motor oil is used primarily as a lubricant for the rotating and reciprocating items (crankshaft, camshaft, pistons, rods and bearings)in your engine. Secondly is is used to keep these items cool.

ATF (automatic transmission fluid) is used in automatic transmissions as a hydraulic fluid that makes the transmission operate, and lubes and cools the parts also. ATF is used in manual transmissions as a lube and cooling agent.

Gear oil is used in differentials (rear-ends) to provide lubrication for the gears and bearings in them.

Hope I helped! What is the purpose and function of motor oil. What is the purpose and function of ATF and Gear OIl?
Motor oil keeps the pistons lubed and cool. ATF is hydraulic fluid for automatic transmissions, and gear oil is used in manual (mostly rear wheel drive) transmissions.

Where do i put gear oil in a 1996 ford contour? I can't get the gears to shift now after parking the car.?

I own a 1996 Ford Contour it's a 5 speed V-6. After parking the car now I can't get it into reverse or any other gear without forcing it. It sounds as if something is dry. I want to add gear oil to try to fix this problem but don't know how or where. Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks!Where do i put gear oil in a 1996 ford contour? I can't get the gears to shift now after parking the car.?
I believe it's going to be that your clutch slave cylinder is going to be out of fluid, it's mounted on the fire wall next to your brake master cylinder, just unscrew the round black lid and fill it up with Dot3 brake fluid. Then pump your clutch a few times and you should be ready to go. If you wont to check the oil level in your transmission , you should be able to see a plug on the side of the transmission, it;s the top plug , the bottom plug is to drain it with . just unscrew the top plug and if oil doesn't run out when you unscrew the plug just stick your finger into the hold you should be able to fill oil ,if not you will need to add so gear oil to the transmission, usually a 80/90 w gear oil is what you would use.it comes in a plastic bottle,so you can cut the tip off to put the oil into the hole,Where do i put gear oil in a 1996 ford contour? I can't get the gears to shift now after parking the car.?
it may be low on clutch master cylinder fluid due to a leak at master , line or slave cylinder, that is what releases clutch to allow you to shift gears, the resivoir is on driverside next to brake master cylinder it uses dot3 brake fluid, but if it was low you have a leak and will need to bleed system, some times you can just pump pedal and get it to shift, but you will have to pump every time you try to shift, like when u have air in brake system, start by checking fluid level
first off, i have not seen a contour yet that had a manual transmission, so with that adding gear oil would only make the solution allot more expensive. but if you are really driving a contour with a stick, then you should be able to find a filler tube according to wiki answers. i attached the link so that you could read through it. at the same time a low fluid level in the trans would not give you this problem. how ever a failing or out of adjustment slave cylinder/ clutch linkage would give you this problem.

    http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_cha鈥?/a>
On the transmission on the bottom there is big drain plug and right above that about the middle of the gearbox there is the fill plug.

Pull the fill plug and you cant overfill it and pour in gl 4 gear oil to the top of the hole or until it starts running out, so don't worry you cant overfill it.
Has the car stood for a while? if so it seems that the clutch plate is stuck, press clutch pedal to floor, switch off engine, select 4th or 5th gear, switch on and try to start engine (make sure the brakes are on) keep trying until engine starts..
If you can't get it in gear it's because the clutch will not engage meaning that first you should check to see if you are leaking fluid from the clutch. If that's not the case then it is probably worn out and needs to be replaced.
You add gear oil at the rear of the axle where the yolk is. this will not help your case it sounds like you need transmission fluid along with some master cylinder fluid. You put the transmission fluid in where it says trans. fluid dipstick.

but ya can also check the level in the diff..

ya should be able to reach your oil level within the first jpint of your index finger,,,, if ya cannot reach the fluid in this reach, add to that point, then recheck regularly ,,,,

also when ya clean off ur diff. place a piece of clean cardboard under it overnite,,if ya got a leak?? ya gonna find drips !!!!!

    good luck,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
if you cant see a leak on the diff. you should pull the wheels and drums off the axle seals could be leaking
some rear end lube is normal, just remove the cover and use black RTV instead of a gasket.
There should be a screw (possibly with a 3/8'; square indentation in it) towards the top/middle of your differential. Open this up, if gear oil comes out then you are full, if gear oil doesn't come out then you are low and should refill until you see gear oil come out of the hole the screw was in. After cleaning the area very well, check after some driving to see if the bottom of the differential is wet, if so you need a gasket.

Accidentally put gear oil in the engine oil?

    Hi,

I accidentally put a small amount (1/2 cup) of gear oil in the engine oil. Both the engine oil and gear oil in the car are Valvoline brand, so the containers looked identical. Is there anything I should worry about or is flushing the oil the only way to fix this problem? ThanksAccidentally put gear oil in the engine oil?
Gear lube isn't as thick as some oil additives like STP, but it is not designed to burn and it isn't meant to get quite as warm. The worst thing I'd be concerned about is fouling your spark plugs, and even then, I wouldn't be too concerned as long as the rest of the engine is healthy.

A little bit won't hurt because engine oil is designed to mix with contaminates. If the exhaust smell bothers you or if you want peace of mind, then drain the oil and start over again. If it were my own vehicle, (and it was only a quarter of a quart) then I'd just keep driving it until my next oil change.Accidentally put gear oil in the engine oil?
It probably wont hurt with such a small amount, but I wouldnt let it go too long without changing it, just to be sure. If you can still safely add oil, then add some of your normal stuff up to the point that it should normally be at. This will help dilute it further. But I would still change it the first chance you get.
It's a small amount but it needs to come out asap. Not only can it eat away at seals but it can have adverse affects when it mixes and cause the regular oil to lose it's lubricating ability. Do an oil change asap and you'll be fine.
that small of amount wont hurt anything it is just a heavier oil and you have 4-4.5 quarts of normal oil in there to dilute the gear oil.
flush it out asap if its not the right oil it will eat away at the seals including the valve seals

It depends on the type of oil you are mixing. 32:1 (4 ounces oil to a gallon of fuel), is a safe although for some types of oil that is a bit much. You can run ATF in the bottom end, it doesn't offer any cusion for the gears but it keeps the clutch in good shape. What is the gas/oil ratio for a yz 125, and what is the best kind of gear oil to use? Can u use trans. fluid?
32:1 if ridden on an MX track, 36:1 if trail riding. Yamalube R or Mobil 1 MX2T are good pre-mix oils.

Spectro 80wt is a decent motorcycle trans oil, but pricey. In my off-road bikes I run a 50/50 blend of Type F ATF and 10w-30 motor oil (usually the lowest price shelf brands). I change gear oil often, every 2 to 3 trail rides or every race. My '98 GasGas EC250 still has the original clutch.

  • What is the diffrence between 80/90 weight gear oil and 75/140 weight synthetic gear oil?

There is different additives and detergents added to these specific gear oils, as well as the diffence is viscosity. You should stay with what your manaufacturer requires, but you can get 80/90 in synthetic.(Castrol Syntorc) When changing your rear diff fluid, some vehicles require a limited slip additive, so be sure to check your owners manual. What is the diffrence between 80/90 weight gear oil and 75/140 weight synthetic gear oil?
The viscosity. You should stick with the specific specific weight oil that your vehicle takes. Using synthetic oil is better than regular gear oil, as it usually lasts about 80K miles with normal use. What is the diffrence between 80/90 weight gear oil and 75/140 weight synthetic gear oil?

Gear oil in washing machine & tumble dryer?

Anyone know how to get the smell of gear oil out of washing machine and tumble dryer?Gear oil in washing machine %26amp; tumble dryer?
ok this is going to sound crazy but my husband is a mechanic and i have been there. the auto parts store has a soap called orange GOJO. put some on a HOT old cloth and wipe it over the oil and let it sit for a few minutes. dont lather it just wipe it and let it sit. then go back over it with a hot cloth. also i have use mr clean majic erasers after the gojo and it gets the rest off. but run the washer on 1 hot cycle before you put another load in or they will smell like oranges! good luck!!Gear oil in washing machine %26amp; tumble dryer?
For the tumble dryer u can get sheets that make your washing smell gd maybe try those? Washing machine maybe fabric softner?
Why did you put gear oil in there? If it`s your boiler suits that have stunk it out try plenty of fabric conditioner in a cold wash rinse,no clothes, just let it run it`s cycle, should help a bit.

What type of gear oil do you use in transfer case?

Check the manual. There is a huge differnce depending on type. Some use heavy gear oil and some use lightweight oil like transmission oil or engine oil. make sure you know what is right! What type of gear oil do you use in transfer case?
    Transfer case in WHAT?

    Ford?

    Chevy?

...................???What type of gear oil do you use in transfer case?
I recommend http://www.mobiloil.com synthetic oil of the proper weight specified in your owner's manual.
Check the owner's manual. It is different for all cars and depends on 2 or 4-wheel drive, and front vs. rear-wheel drive.
depends on the application but the most common is 90W
use go 80w90 same as in the transmission and rear.. ok
My Dodge and Chevy both use auto trans fluid.

Where do I put in gear oil in my 1990 Toyota Corolla (automatic transmission)?

under hood and down thru the tiny dipstick tube, the same place you check the fluid level, its a pain and you need a funnel with a tiny end, then after filling you have to wait for fluid to drain down or the fluid in tube will give you false full readingWhere do I put in gear oil in my 1990 Toyota Corolla (automatic transmission)?
Usually the transmission fluid (not gear oil) is added through the tube that holds the dipstick. Make sure you use the right fluid. It will probably specify on the dipstick itself. Make sure not to overfill it.
    Probably through the dipstick tube.

  • Where does the gear oil go?

I believe i need gear oil for my Kia 2001 manual transmissions while driving the car it lost compression and the gears did not work. Could i need gear oil if so how do i go about putting it in?Thank you for your input.Where does the gear oil go?
Gear oil is not compression related. It is drive-train related (ie..trans-axle, differential)Where does the gear oil go?
HEY JOSE P. give me more info how do you know it lost compression? what kind of testing did you run on your engine?

did you do a compression test your car is not that old to have compression problems sorry! and your engine has nothing to do with the transmission, manual transmissions can go years without adding oil unless it has a leaking

    i'll wait for more info
Gear oil goes in the manual transmission gearbox or the differentials.

If you lost clutch pedal pressure, you might need to check to see if your clutch master cylinder is low on fluid. Use brake fluid to top it off.

    It is not very clear as to what you are describing by ';lost compression and the gears did not work.';

Are you talking about the clutch pedal feeling soft or just going to the floor? (See above)

Gear oil does not go into the engine! Engine oil does. A lack of gear oil in the transmission will cause it to make growling or grinding noises while driving, and make it hard to shift gears. If it has been driven long enough with very low or no gear oil in the tranny you may have ruined the transmission.
there should be a plug on the side of the tranny.take it out and squirt some oil in it till it starts to run out.make sure the car is level and not running.dont forget to put the plug back in.
    in the engine
Yeah, ummm if you lost compression the transmission is the least of your worries at this point. I would have the car towed to your repair shop and have them check it out. you have most likely blown the head on the motor or seized the engine up.
See a mechanic before you do something thats gonna cost ya alot of dinero because you don't know whacha doin
If the car lost compression,it has nothing to do with the transmission, sorry

How do you put get gear oil in the gearbox of a 1996 Peugeot 309 GL.?

I have a peugeot 309 on which i had repair work done on the axle a couple of days back. the guys who did the job are clueless about how to put the transmission oil back in the gearbox. Please help!!How do you put get gear oil in the gearbox of a 1996 Peugeot 309 GL.?
I have 3 cars with the TU engine and an XU5 engine, the 405 with a very similar gearbox. I believe your engine is the TU, XU or XU5, similar gearboxes.

NOTE! if you have an automatic gearbox, simply fill the gearbox through the dipstick pipe. If you have a manual gearbox, read on....

The gear box is on the left side of the 1996 TU, XU, or XU5 engine.

If you look over the top front edge of the left tire, you will see a filling hole BOLT. The bolt is removed with a square 8mm rod (just like the motor oil drain plug). And there will be a copper ring washer to replace, maybe a smaller size than the engine oil plug ring.

Fill the gear box with GEAR OIL. Fill it through that little hole, horizontally, which is difficult. I fill mine by using a little 100 ml, 5 ounce, squeeze bottle held in a level position while I squeeze. I refill the squeeze bottle 15 to 20 times. Or, create a funnel above with a long plastic hose into the gearbox filling hole.

Fill the gearbox until gear oil overflows the hole and runs out.

PS: did your friends find the drain hole, or did it all leak out upon removing the driveshaft (you said 'axle').

    quoting from the WIKI pedia:

In 1991 Peugeot gradually phased in their all-new belt-driven TU overhead camshaft engines, a development of the XU series, in 1124 cc and 1360 cc forms, eventually replacing the Simca units during 1992.

Electric shift systems can ONLY use type C oil. Using anything other that Type C rated (like yamalube gear oil) can cause shifting issues and may damage the lower unit.

Does anyone know how to remove gear box oil from clothes, which got badly splashed with it.?

I've tried washing soda, and machine washed twice at 60 degrees. it still smells terrible!Does anyone know how to remove gear box oil from clothes, which got badly splashed with it.?
Ouch, that one sucks! I deal with this all the time, because my husband is a certified auto tech (aka mechanic), as well as a certified gearhead! Since you've already washed it, we can skip some steps. I would get some Oxy-Clean and double the amount suggested on the box. Let it soak in the water and Oxy-Clean mixture for a few hours, then wash on the heavy soil cycle. Rinse twice. You may need to do this a couple of times, but it usually works. For future reference, we usually use a paper towel to wipe off most of the goo, then put a paste of Oxy-Clean and water on the area and let it soak in for a while. It helps break down the thickness of the grease, and starts to take the stain out. (Do this before putting water on it!) Then, reapply the Oxy-Clean and water paste to get another layer out. After that, you can usually throw it in the washer to take the rest of the stain out. I hope this helps!Does anyone know how to remove gear box oil from clothes, which got badly splashed with it.?
    comma manista hand cleaner

    from car shops
Once I got oil on the toe of my slipper, and a friend told me to rub butter on it, and then soak it in detergent. It got most of it out. The butter dissolves the grease because it is greasy too. Nowadays I would try vegetable oil for the dissolver because it is cheaper, and then soak it in two or three tablespoons of Tide and a scoop of Oxy-Clean thoroughly mixed into two gallons of warm water. You will probably have to do this several times.
YOu could take them to the drycleaner. Dry cleaning will take out All oils and smell. If you are not able to do that soak them in Dawn dish soap.

    Good Luck
Greased Lightening! Works very well but is a bit expensive and I would try it diluted first before full strength. Comes in a White bottle with black and yellow labeling with a lightening bolt on the front). I know some mechanics who add some to the load before they wash their work clothes.
put dawn dish soap on it Like you would with shout or spray and wash -It cuts through the grease

then pour a can of coke and listerine in the washing machine and wash it in warm water this will help with the smell
Do you have a product called ';Simple Green'; available where you live? Use it full strength.

Oxy Clean, or take it to a professional where they wash uniforms for mechanics. Other than that trust me, it wont be comming off, I have shirts that still kind of smell like oil, and they are stained forever with it too. Buy some coveralls.
Hand cleaner that you get at auto store {this always got stains out for me] and works great on kids clothes too , greased lighting
i fear they are a gonner dude. sorry.

put more on in random patterns. make it look like it is supposed to be like that

    ';unless it is on the crotch';
Have you dried the clothes - you're done...

If not get some hand cleaner and rub it in and let it set for a long time. Then use wash warm with extra detergent and let it set (stop the wash for a while).

OR take them to a dry cleaner...
Try putting Pine Sol on it. This works great for grease stains believe it or not. I'm thinking this will still work even after two washes! Good luck.

What weight of gear oil do I put in a Honda 9.9 4 stroke?

This motor has been sitting a while and has a hard time going into reverce. Is my problem the gear oil, or could I have bigger problems? What weight of gear oil do I put in a Honda 9.9 4 stroke?
If you had no oil in the lower unit and you have been running it, you may have a ruined lower unit. Try filling it with a 85w 90 marine gear oil, Honda used Mercury premium blend or Hi performance gear oil in their bigger motor and it will work in yours.

Run it and see if it gets better, if not, time to rebuild or replace.

Don't have a clue what the other guy is talking about. What weight of gear oil do I put in a Honda 9.9 4 stroke?
a honda four stroke is a honda... i thought the unit has a common sump... (its a generator engine at th end f the day) drain it, flush it out with a mix of parrafin and old oil, (run it for a few minutes til hot) then stop and drain it, fill it with 15-40. 15-50....
I think the first guy is talking about giving the power head castor oil?????

I would use mercans advise. Fill it with marine gear lube ( I always use merc Hi-perf), see if the problem goes away. I would run in for a few minutes in gear and drain the gear lube agian to check for metal flakes. To help from taking it out on the lake and getting stuck.

My rear end has been leaking gear oil out the pinyon seal. Gear oil is now comming out from my rear tire?

I found a puddle of gear oil comming the inside of my rear wheel. I took tire off and it looks like its comming out through the axle in through the brake drum area. Why is this happening? is there a bigger problem? Can I fix this myself? Is my vent clogged? How much will a mechanic charge me to fix all this?My rear end has been leaking gear oil out the pinyon seal. Gear oil is now comming out from my rear tire?
a clogged vent will do it. the oil coming out inside your tire is a axle seal leaking. take a piece of wire and see if you can unclog the vent. it might stop leaking on it,s own after the vent is opened. My rear end has been leaking gear oil out the pinyon seal. Gear oil is now comming out from my rear tire?
The pinion seal isn't that hard to change, but an axle seal is a little more difficult depending on the application. I would first be sure that is is an axle seal leaking and not the wheel cylinder which is located inside the brake drum.

For the pinion seal you will have to drop the rear drive shaft and tape the ujoint together to make sure your caps dont come off the u joint. Then remove the big nut in the center of the pinion and lightly tap with a hammer to remove the pinion. You may have a seal sheild behind the pinion that should slide right off also. Then pop out the seal and replace with a new one.

A tip that has helped me allot over the years is when I take something apart I lay it on a piece of cardboard in the order that I removed it. That way I know the order to put it back together.

    Thanks, hope I helped:)
The above is right, an axle seal on top of the possible leaking pinion seal is bad, this would be the only reason for gear oil to be there, a leaking pinion seal would never get gear oil here. Labour really depends on the vehicle, the parts are really cheap not more than 20 bucks for the axle seal, labour is what can run high. the pinion seal as well is relatively cheap (seen some that run $60 though), but again labour is the main component.
Behind that rear wheel is your axle and bearing and seals. But with your front pinion seal in the front of the rear end I would say that its time to tear the rear end apart and replace all seals and axle bearing but to do that you might be in for some machine work with a press to get the bearings and seals replaced. If your not familair with doing this have someone that has more experience do it or take it to a shop. The cost is not all that bad to have it done by a shop and just think you get a warranty with it to incase of something else might go bad they would be responsible for.But find a good shop that can do it and if you can pay for it stand there and watch them you might get some experience by asking questions to them about the work on your car.hgm20002000@yahoo.com
your axle seal is shot I. it happen to me and my brakes would lock up and it was really weird feeling. my grandpa fixed it so it was cheap for me. i dont think it will be very expensive. as far as the rear end goes the gasket on the '; pumkin '; is pretty cheap.
Sounds like someone overfilled the rear end pinion seal two axle seals and a new set of rear brake shoes you can replace the brakes and axle seals, let a pro do the pinion seal....
you need to get both axle seals replaced and a new pinion seal, ask your local mechanic for prices to fix.
You've got a bad pinion seal and at least one bad axle seal.

    MERCON ATF.

Use Redline MTL, you can't go wrong, pours like a atf and protects like a heavy 90 wt
personally i would use 75-80 or 80-90 gear oil, not that ATF doesnt work but you'll burn up the gears and sychros way faster. as for manufactur spec look in the owners manual
It most likely takes DextronIII/ Mercon ATF which is yes for auto transmissions but some manuals take it too. It should say what it suggests in the owners' manual though.

Why do good synthetic gear oil shift a lot faster?

A little education about oil goes a long way. All oils contain some synthetic elements. These are liquid polymers called stabilizers( OK. Long chain polymers for the science geeks out there). What these do for oil is to force the carbon atoms to hold together for a longer period of time under heat and pressure. Synthetic oils have the carbon atoms integrated directly into the synthetic components from the start. This makes for a long lasting smoother shifting oil that does not break down (AS MUCH) at low temperatures. The basic components still come from the same place. Refineries and liquid polymer manufacturing facilities. They are just put together in a different manufacturing process. This is true for all oils, gear oil, motor oil, transmission oil, even grease... A good fossil motor oil breaks down at around 240 to 260 degrees fareheight. A synthetic oil does not start to break down until it gets to somewhere around 400 to 600 degrees farenheight. Also the molecules are slippery or they don't redily bond with other things like the carbon atoms in the engine block or other components of the engine or transmission. Don't get me wrong here, this is only an extreamly rough description of what realy happening with these oils. they will still break down over time and need to be changed out mostly just from accumulating the junk that gets into them on a regular schedule. They just hold up and provide lubrication for a longer period of time than regular ';fossil'; oil blends do.

How do you change the gear oil in a 2003 mercruiser alpha 1 lower unit, can not find the drain plug?

the first response is correct. Remove screw at bottom and then remove screw at top of outdrive and resevoir cap. Go to your marine supply dealer and you will need 2qts of merc hi performance lower unit oil and also purchase the pump for it as it has fitting to screw into lower screw hole that makes it less messy. a silver screw in the bottom of the outdrive. put the drive unit as ';straight'; down as you can. on the engine is a small plastic bottle with green oil in it. remove the screw, then take the top off the reservoir(bottle). it takes a while, be patient. to fill, put the oil in the bottom 'til you reach the full mark on the reservoir.

I have a 2008 Jonway scooter and it requires that I use GL-3 gear oil but I cannot seem to find any anywhere?

Does anyone know where I can find it or another substitute that is equal?I have a 2008 Jonway scooter and it requires that I use GL-3 gear oil but I cannot seem to find any anywhere?
    Use GL4 or 5

You'll probably only be able to Find GL-5 rated oil

    ..........................

I dunno if youre interested, and you dont NEED to Know,,,but here's a quick overview of bare basics.

    ';GL-'; means Gear Lube.

It's lubrication rating is based upon it's BASE OIL,,,which are all pretty much the same.

That's a ';minimum spec'; standard for ingredients necessary for use in gears

Then it's Lubrication Rating on a scale of 1 thru 5,,,

according to the oil's Anti-Friction Additive Package

GL1,,,is very light duty,,,and has NO antiwear additives.

GL2,,is ';light duty, plus';,,,and has Very Little anti -wear ingredients,,,maybe 1~2%

    GL3 is ';light-to-medium duty oil';,,,it has Approx 3% anti-wear additives.

    GL4 is wide range,,,light-to-heavy duty.

It's almost like the minimum ';Universal Oil'; that will go into almost anything

It has about 4% antiwear,,,which makes it sufficient for hypoid gears

GL5 is extreme heavy duty/severe service,,

    It's a minimum 6% anti-wear.

It covers a lot of Mfgr Specs which are far beyond %26amp;dont apply to Scooters/motorcycles

There are other Higher Grades,,,but rarely specified,,hard to find,,,Exotic and expensive

So while GL3 or even GL2 is acceptible for your scooter,,

    it's like a Bare Minimum.

GL5 is actually ';THE Stuff'; to use,,,,it runs cooler, quieter, lasts longer---the Oil lasts longer,,,and the parts it lubricates last much longer

Scooters use a tiny, tiny amount for a refill,,,,and the recommended change interval is usually quite a long time.

That makes ';Annual Cost'; of gear oil silly-cheap when figured on cost of conventional gear oil.

Which in turn means that you can use a Premium Brand/Type which cost 2~3Times more per-quart than ';plain Gear Oil';,,,,

and still only be spending a couple Dollars per year.

A Very Good Choice is Mobil 1 Synthetic.

Use the 75w-90 in your scooter.

You can use it at least TWICE as long as recommended,,,and when ya change it You'll be draining OUT better oil than brand new GL3 still in the bottle.

    It's That Good.

***I'm NOT saying to extend the change interval,,,OK?

I'm saying,,,If you run Over the recco'd change miles or time,,

You can remain confident the oil is still in excellent condition and doing it's job properly.

So it's Cheap Insurance for your scooter's gearbox is protected as good as any lubricant can,,,

even under extreme or adverse conditions and even after oil has gotten far ';too old'; according to the book.

    Mobil 1 is usually $8~9/qt

    Cheap Crapp is $5

You can find it at any auto parts store,,probly even WalMart.

    Anyway,,,use GL-3 or Higher.

GL-5 is easiest to find,,,and it's a HUGE Upgrade in lube performance.

Full Synthetic only cost a couple dollars more,,,and is a Huge Upgrade Again.

    I'd use Mobil 1,,,75w-90

Lucas brand is excellent but a bit heavier,

Valvoline has a synthetic Blend thats good too

Hope that helpsI have a 2008 Jonway scooter and it requires that I use GL-3 gear oil but I cannot seem to find any anywhere?
Looks like GL-3 oil (came up scooter oil when I typed it in the search engine) comes back with 85W90 oil. The link below is from a site that carries several different weights of oil, and your type is listed for you.
do you kno what weight of gear oil that is you can go to any parts store and buy it dont have to be company brand oil just gear oil

The transmission drain plug is on the right side of the oil pan about halfway back. Warm the oil up by riding the bike. Prop the bike upright and pull the plug. Use a new o ring on the plug. The filler is on the front corner of the tranny on the right side.It takes a large allen wrench. Fill the tranny til it's at the right level with the bike upright. Don't screw the plug in to check the level. Just let the threads on the plug rest against the case. Look at the oil you drained out. A metallic sheen is ok.But any chips or flakes of metal means you have a problem. Don't over fill the tranny. How do I change my gear box oil on my 2002 Harley Davidson Super Glide?
    Andy is right.

I don't know about your owner's manual, but mine (for '06) has the tranny and engine drain plugs mis-labled. In the pictures, and everything.

How much to use: approx. 1 quart.
the only thing to add is the Part number for the O-ring is 11105 and it takes 20~24 oz of Syn3.

the drain plug is behind the flat piece of steel that hangs down below the right frame rail.
Andy is correct. I just wanted to say that I tried the HD synth in my trans and didn't like it. made my trans noisy. I prefer to use Bel-Ray gear saver. HD oil is just hype anyway.
    Andy F is correct.
unless I'm mistaken there are two alan screws on the oil pan, one for oil one for the trans
Andy is right. I can't understand why it seems nobody reads their owners manual. Lots of good stuff in there.

How Can I Check The Gear Oil Level in Golf MK2?

Because I hear a loud sound from the gear .How Can I Check The Gear Oil Level in Golf MK2?
Boy you set yourself a difficult task!

get the car up and level on 4 jack stands in your garage(Serious about that or this won't work) A lift at a shop would be adequate.

You need a monster allen wrench and a hammer to remove the plug on the transmission. Start at the Drivers side end of trans go towards back of vehicle and toward center as the trans shape dictates till you find the big plug. This is not a drain plug but where you check the level.

Get a pan under the p[lug and then remove the plug. Trans lube ';should'; drain out into the pan. This still isn't a drain plug! When the fluid stops put the plug back in. Measure how much came out(hahahahaha) Yeas, You can't really. Is it approximately 3/4 quart( US) 3/4 Litre(Euro)??????

If not it was low. See how frickin dumb this is???

Now remove the speedo cable retaining bolt and gently extract the cable and gear from the trans. With a very long funnel add in 3/4 quart of 80W-90 or your preferred synthentic(only if you switched already!!!!). Replace the speedo cable and gear.

If nothing came out the big port, you have to add lube till something does then stop and let it drain till it stops. Then put the plug in and add 3/4 quart at the speedo cable.

Are you getting that this is the dumbest thing VW did to A2 owners?

Check any drained fluid for metal contamination. A2 gearboxes are notorious for machining certain parts to failure and then blowing through the case. Rebuilding is so iffy, and there aren't many places in the USA that I trust.

    Good Luck pal

Topping up is a simple under the bonnet procedure, draining is generally a lot more complicated.

Whilst I can't speak about Honda gearboxes, many automatic transmissions don't have a drain plug, the fluid is changed by dropping the entire oilpan, unless you have a ramp or inspection pit, this can be an awkward, messy job.

I would be inclined to call at your local dealer and ask a friendly mechanic if it's got a plug, they're normally quite helpfull.

What kind of gear box oil should I get for a 2 stroke 50cc scooter?

    Hi Kathy,,

You should always state Make/Year/Model so You can get a Specific answer %26amp; Correct Info.

You can use a variety of different types of oil,,

    as Strange as that sounds.

    Motor Oil:

    10w-30,10w-40,20w-50

    Straight 30w or 40w

    Gear Oil:

    GL3,GL4,GL5

    75w,,,80w,,or 75w/90

    ATF(Auto Trans Fluid)

    Type F is heavier

    Any type will do fine

    ..............

Here's more info,if you care to read

50cc 2 stroke scooters are almost Generic,,,the majority are patterned after an old ,old Yamaha design.

The gearboxes which need the oil are Very simple.

It's just a simple set of 3 reduction gears.

They are each on their own shaft, supported by Ball Bearings.

The only reason there's 3 gears and not just a single pair,is to maintain proper rotaion direction of the rear wheel.

As much as we all obsess about Lubricants,,,,that particular unit is just NOT THAT Picky about oil.

Relatively speaking,,its a ';Light Duty'; application

    *Low temperatures

    *Low Speed

    *Light loads

--and fairly robust components for the job it does.

Same boxes are used for 100's and 125/150's in lots of scooters,,,,

and Lots of scooters get ';hopped-up'; to Twice their original power %26amp; speed.

So when I say,,';Not Picky about gear oil';,,,

I'm Not saying ';It doesn't matter';,,,,,but it really almost doesn't.

Yamaha itself specifies 10w-30 Grade SE motor oil.

    Their scooters serve for Generations,,,Decades,, all over Asia----in what can be considered ';extreme,continuous duty';

Lots of people use 20w-50 motor oil,,

Straight 30w or 40w Motor oil is also fine.

Type ';F'; Automatic Transmission Fluid is excellent choice.

You'll never find Any MFG recommend it,,,which is odd.

It's Made for that type of application ,while NO motor oil is.

And every property of ATF far,far surpasses any motor oil for use in gearboxes .

    Go Figure.???

Several Scooters Mfgr's specify Actual GEAR OIL.

    Typically Grade GL3.

    75w,,,or 75w/90 weight.

That's almost the lowest GRADE and Lightest weight Gear oil ya can get.

Someone here recently asked about using GL5 in place of GL3 gear oil,,because they could not Find GL3.

GL5 is a large upgrade in lubrication over GL3 and Fine for use in any modern scooter gear box.

';75w'; gear oil SOUNDS a LOT Thicker/heavier than 10w-30 Motor Oil.

    Actually,,it's approximately the same .

Gear Oil and Motor Oil are Graded on 2 Different Scales.

It's an ';apples vs oranges '; comparrison,as far the viscosity numbers.

I mention that because the difference in the Numbers always raises questions.

ATF,,Auto Trans Fluid,,,never has a Number Grade,,,but always Seems very watery %26amp; thin.

It's actually about 30w to 40w ,,,IF Graded on a Motor Oil scale.

    So,,,almost ANY Motor Oil,Gear Oil,or ATF.

And almost anything beyond plain ol' 10w-30 is an ';Upgrade';.

'Bleive it or not,,it just happens to work out that way.

    ......................................鈥?br>

Two Stroke Oil for use in the Engine is a whole 'nother story.

You want to always use a very high quality oil,,,because in That application it makes BIG Difference.

These days,,practically Any SYNTHETIC 2-Stroke OIl for Motorcyles is a good safe bet.

    Everybody has their own prefferences.

Beyond that,,,just in General,,,the Synthetics all offer a certain range of properties which are very important to 2 stroke motors.

All of them will improve engine life,,,and reduce maintenance due to less carbon build-up,,

    improve spark plug life,,,

and ';Maybe'; improve performance and fuel mileage a little bit.

They usually cost a more,,,but will eventually pay for the difference .

And they keep your scooter running better, longer.

Another thing,,,Try an NGK Iridium Spark Plug.

They usually make a Noticeable Difference

    ......................................鈥?br>

You didn't specify the make and model but I think generally automatic transmission fluid would do fine.

Car automatic transmissions use very similar wet clutches that bike transmissions use.

I wouldn't recommend regular motor oil because the many gears in a transmission actually loads the oil more so than in a 4 stroke engine. But if you have no choice, then change the motor oil in the transmission case frequently.

4 stroke motorcycles generally combine the crankcase and the transmission into the same case. The reason bike oil changes should be followed very closely is because it is the transmission which wears the motor oil out faster than the engine would.

    what do you have?

    most are 10w-30 motor oil

Aren't these automatic? I.e. CVT? So they don't have gears as such, so they don't have gear oil - I think. There may be some kind of lubrication system for the pulleys, but I doubt whether that would actually need changing as such. If they're not automatic, the gear oil is the same as the engine oil. Are you sure you don't wanna change the engine oil? Warm the engine up first, so the oil runs more easily. The drain plug will be on the underside of the motor. Put a big enough container under the motor, undo the plug, and drain the oil. REPLACE THE PLUG! Refill the motor with the specified quantity of oil.

Wher do you put gear oil in after you have changed the clutch?

1994 geo metroWher do you put gear oil in after you have changed the clutch?
Actually, there are 2 different possibilities on the 1985-2000 Geo Metro, neither of which involve removing the speedometer gear.

With both types, it is recommended that you first bring the vehicle to operating temperature.

On models with an Oil Level Gauge, unscrew said Gauge from the top of the side case of the transaxle. Wipe clean. Fit gauge into hole without screwing in, then pull out and read gauge. Level should be between Full and Low level line. Fill as necessary. (presumably through same hole)

On models with Oil Level/Filler Plug, unscrew plug (looks like behind and slightly above drivers side halfshaft). Level should be even with the bottom of the plug hole. Fill as necessary. (again, presumably through same hole) Replace Oil Level/Filler Plug, and torque to 40 ft. lbs.

Can I use 80w-90 gear oil to clean my new rotors instead of buying a can of brake cleaner?

Why do you want to ';clean' them?? Wire brush for rust, and soap and water for the rest works just fine! Oil will leave some residue that has to burn off before it lets brakes operate right! When repalcing brakes on my cars, I just stand back and ';hose the area down good with water';. This keeps the dust from being inhaled, and gets all the ';powder off most things, - the wheels I use soap and water to get stuff off, (as it removes accumulated grease too)! Can I use 80w-90 gear oil to clean my new rotors instead of buying a can of brake cleaner?
If you do not get all of the oil off, including the very thin film that is difficult to clean off, you will find that you may have poor brake operation.

I recommend that you use the commercial brake cleaner to clean the rotors. Can I use 80w-90 gear oil to clean my new rotors instead of buying a can of brake cleaner?
Sure, go ahead. It won't hurt a thang!
ABSOLUTELY NOT.Putting gear oil or any thing similar will coat them and when you put the caliper back on with the brake pads in it the oil will contaminate the pads and render them useless HENCE NO BRAKES.You can buy a cheap can of brake parts cleaner at a parts store like auto-zone just buy the store brand.I believe the cost will be under two-three dollars and since it's the same chemical as the brand name ones you get the same results CLEAN DRY BRAKE ROTORS even if they are brand new with the anti corrosion coating on them as ANY BRAKE CLEANER will dissolve it.
    dah
are you joking? no you cant do that the purpose of using brake cleaner is to clean off the oil that is on the rotors that the factory uses to keep them from rusting , oil on your break pads is a bad thing brake cleaner is the only way to go because it dries residue free.
if the auto parts store is closed and you cannot get brake cleaner, you can use dish soap and hot water in a pinch, after washing them, dry good with a towel,
I would say not, why would you use oil on it you want the friction to stop you
Wholy cripes NO. Today replacement brake rotors come with a water soluable grease on the surfaces. Wash then off with dish soap in a large paint pail.

We do brakes every day and almost always cleaning instructions are inside. I almost forgot, cheap off-shore rotor boxes tell you nothing. Not even how bad the product you just purchesed actually is!
hell no. your trying to get the grease OFF, WD-40 .RUBBING ALCHOL , or somthang like that will work. but no oil , gear lube or that kind of stuff will not work.
    wouldn't suggest it
oil, on a device that works by friction????

NO, don't be cheap, buy the cleaner. Oil on a rotor will make your brakes fail!

Why does the gear oil 75w-90 bottle say it conforms to SAE 10w-40 15w-40 motor oil?

What will happen If I put Gear Oil instead of engine oil in a generator engine?

Its a 2KV small home generatorWhat will happen If I put Gear Oil instead of engine oil in a generator engine?
*Pump for engine oil is designed for a particular viscosity .If it pumps higher viscosity oil pump will get overloaded and oil may not reach its destination .Read the following and you will come to know that the function of both types of oils is different.

If you use non-recommended oil , it will hamper the performance in a long run which will put your generator in trouble at any time.

Motor oil, or engine oil, is an oil used for lubrication of various internal combustion engines. While the main function is to lubricate moving parts, motor oil also cleans, inhibits corrosion, improves sealing and cools the engine by carrying heat away from the moving parts. The majority of motor oils are derived from petroleum. Motor oil mostly consists of hydrocarbons, organic compounds consisting entirely of carbon and hydrogen.

-Other non-motor oils include gear or transmission, and differentials oils. These are used in manual gearboxes and driven axles. They could include specialty uses including EP (Extreme Pressure), hypoid, and limited slip functions.

Again, they are not to be used for engine lubrication.

Gear oil is a motor oil made specifically for transmissions, transfer cases, and differentials in automobiles, trucks, and other machinery. It is of a higher viscosity to better protect the gears and usually is associated with a strong sulfur smell. The high viscosity ensures transfer of lubricant throughout the gear train. This is necessary since the devices needing this heavy oil do not have pumps for transferring the oil with only a portion of the lowermost gears bathed in an oil sump. This heavy oil can create viscous drag leading to inefficiencies in vehicle operation. Some modern automatic transaxles (integrated transmission and differential) do not use a heavy oil at all but lubricate with the lower viscosity hydraulic fluid, which is available at pressure within the automatic transmission. What will happen If I put Gear Oil instead of engine oil in a generator engine?
You stand a good chance of frying the engine. Gear oil normally runs at an SAE viscosity rating of around 90. Small internal combustion engines would normally take a viscosity around 30 although they may take a multi viscosity oil like a car engine (check your manual). So the much thicker oil may not reach everywhere that needs lubrication (especially the tighter clearances) and you stand the chance of having those parts overheat.
Why do you want to screw up your home generator?

Look in the manual and put the specified engine oil
    ask a mechanic
gear oil isn't thick enough to keep the engine lubed

  • Where does the gear oil go in a washing machine?

I'm trying to fix my washing machine and the washing machine was on its side and the oil came out of the transmission- Please helpWhere does the gear oil go in a washing machine?
Did you turn the washer over to locate the leak, or did the oil leak only begin once the turn the machine over on it's side?

If you turned the washer over on it's side to locate the leak, it would be a fair guess that you may have a cracked seal at the bottom of the washers transmission. If that's the case, the seal has to be replaced. Before attempting any repairs I suggest you call the manufacturer of the machine and ask if you can obtain a schematic (blue print) of the washer. Some companies post schematics drawings of their products on their home website. This way you not working blind to find the troubled stop. If you feel the problem is over your head, a repairman can come out and you'll probably be looking at $200 for repairs.Where does the gear oil go in a washing machine?
I hate to be the one to inform you, but by turning the washer on its side the oil did come out of the transmission on the bottom of the drum. The reason it came out is because the upper seal is shot. I doubt very much that it will last another year, it's on its last leg. Start saving now for a new machine and don't throw any more money into this one.
if you had very much oil leak out you might need a new gasket for the transmission. if it was just a little it should be ok. if you don,t see a drain plug or fill plug you might need to get a repair shop to check it out.
There is no gear oil in a washer, what is exactly wrong with the washer anyways?
Are you sure. Most washing machines dont have oil in them, and no washing machine I've ever had had transmission.

Is there any danger in adding a quart of gear oil to your crank case?

Assuming you're out of 10-40 and your case needs a quart of oil.Is there any danger in adding a quart of gear oil to your crank case?
Ive seen cars run on 75w90. The only problem is the amount of time it takes to get the gear oil up to the bearings might be too long before you do damage.

P.S. It will never start in cold weather. Is there any danger in adding a quart of gear oil to your crank case?
it will start harder in cold some people do this for severe oiul burning
It is not advised to mix different types of oils. You risk internal damage.
gear oil is not made to be gasoline resistant. it will absorb more gas %26amp; potentally ruin your motor in time. if it was just for a couple of miles to get to a service station then ok. but def. not for prolong periods of time.
Do not mix oils intended for different purposes. They are formulated for the use they are intended for and do not possess the additives critical to other uses.

1999 chevy z-71 tahoe ,rear differential was leaking replaced gasket and gear oil and still leaking at bottom?

It's probably the pinion seal. The fluid leaks back as you drive which makes it look like the cover is leaking.

Those 10 bolts like to eat pinion bearings as well. chock the wheels, put the truck in neutral, and see if there is any slop in the bearing by pushing up and down on the drive shaft where it hooks into the rear end.1999 chevy z-71 tahoe ,rear differential was leaking replaced gasket and gear oil and still leaking at bottom?
I agree with Rod and double E..

Pinion seal leaking.. It's a very common prob on these rears.. Also worn pinion bearing is common too.

That was the death of one of my 7.625'; 10 bolt rears in my camaro1999 chevy z-71 tahoe ,rear differential was leaking replaced gasket and gear oil and still leaking at bottom?
Try doing it with out a gasket and just use sealent. Permatex makes a real good one it is black in color.
Could be the pinion seal leaking, where the driveshaft yoke is bolted in.
    most likely its bent...the differential...

    not good.

Gear oil capacity in ounces for 1999 mercury 25 hp 2-cylinder 2-stroke?

I changed my gear oil and it didn't take as much as I expected. I know to fill from the bottom up till it runs out the top hole, but maybe I have an air bubble in it? It only took 10 ounces.Gear oil capacity in ounces for 1999 mercury 25 hp 2-cylinder 2-stroke?
That sounds about right. If you filled from the bottom until it ran out of the top hole marked ';vent'; then there is no way you have an air bubble.Gear oil capacity in ounces for 1999 mercury 25 hp 2-cylinder 2-stroke?
    My 97 - 90 hp doesn't take a lot more than that - maybe around 16 oz
It's not a very big gearbox.

You can't put a quart in a pint pot!

What brand of gear oil is better Lucius or redline in a Toyota manual trans?

Honestly, Lucus is some of the best stuff on the market.

The Mobil synthetics are decent too.

Would running synthetic gear oil in my 5 speed help my wore out tranny?

I have a 5 speed in my Camaro and the syncos are getting tired for 2nd gear, would running that expensive full synthetic help at all? or what gear oil would you suggest in my position? thanksWould running synthetic gear oil in my 5 speed help my wore out tranny?
depends. if it's really the gears, then no, however what many people think is tranny problems is actaully b/c they haven't kept up on fluid cahnges... in which case, yes, it'll help.Would running synthetic gear oil in my 5 speed help my wore out tranny?
    Not at all
You could try it but I would say no. If they're just starting to go, it may help a bit.

  • 1995 FLHR, what kind of gear oil you think i should use in the primary case?

HD has that 3 in 1 stuff, i heard you can even use 10w-40 motor oil in primary. any suggestions??? tankQ in advance!1995 FLHR, what kind of gear oil you think i should use in the primary case?
Back in the day when I rode a bike with a separate primary case, I used ATF because it was compatible with the clutch plates. You still need to think about that today if you are going to use motor oil. Use an oil with any one of these ratings:

    JASO MA

    API SF

    API SG

API SJ1995 FLHR, what kind of gear oil you think i should use in the primary case?
rev tech puts out primary oil. Motor oil is designed to lub. at approx185-220degrees faren. primaries don't get that hot neither do trannys ,so when you go to the shop to get your supplies, don't take no bulls----.Oil;for the engine/ tranny oil for the trans/primary oil for the primary. It is not the same oil in three different packages.

Can i use gear oil in place of conventional oil in my Chevy 350 V8?

I've heard of folks useing transmission fluid in place of oil. A man I knew did that with his Monte Carlos, he said its better fer his engines and if it leaks from the area and its red on the ground then he knows its his leak.

im wondering if I can use gear oil in place or with the conventional oils?

Would it be better or not if not, then why?Can i use gear oil in place of conventional oil in my Chevy 350 V8?
ok yes/no you need to use your traditional oil but you can put in a quart of transmission fluid once in awhile not all the time only reason i would put trans fluid in is to help clean the motor. you see trans fluid is a high detergent and this will help clean the motor. i have worked on trans for 29 years and maybe once a year or year in a half i would do this myself. still to this day. now i dont mean put gear oil in your car ATF dextronCan i use gear oil in place of conventional oil in my Chevy 350 V8?
    NO

    Engine oil in engine

    Gear oil in gearboxes

    Transmission fluid in transmission

    It's not that hard

Do you find Koolaid in a cow?
NO!!! Use 10W40 of a quality brand. I personally prefer Valvoline. Quaker State and Pennzoil gunk up the rocker shafts ans this is difficult to remove.
Better but some new shoes,,,,it sounds like you're gonna be doin' alot of walking
I'd really steer away from that. Gear oil is formulated to be a lot ';heavier'; (as in viscosity) than regular motor oil. It may work for a hot engine, but it would take a long time for the oil to heat up and make its way to all the critical parts of the engine that need lubrication. Damage to wear-critical components will be amplified by not having oil soon enough. Most likely your lifters and valve train would make a terrific racket until the oil had warmed up. Please stick to the recommended oil for your engine changed at regular intervals and it will last quite a while.

Sidenote: As engines wear it's common for them to make more knocking, tapping noises, etc. as the engine warms up and the oil thins out. An old-fashioned cure-all is to add heavier viscosity motor oil to the engine in the hopes that the oil will stay thicker when it gets hot. Another one is using a cheaper oil filter in the hopes that more oil will get through the filter and reach the top end of the motor to prevent valve-train noise. Since I'm guilty of both of these, I won't tell you not to do them because they generally cause no harm. But adding gear lube to the engine is really not a good idea.
engine oil is a very complicated product designed to withstand heat and cool the engine in addition to allowing two metal surfaces to come in contact with each other.

gear oil is meant to do one thing, resist the shearing forces of gears in a box and it will lose its viscosity very quickly in an engine. When a good engine costs $3000+ why skimp on not buying the best oil at $40 to protect it

What kind of gear oil/transmission fluid would a manual transmission in a 2000 mustang 3.8L take?

It takes automatic tranny fluid called Mercon/Dexron 5 which is a ford and GM fluid there are no difference in the two. Yeah I know it sounds crazy for a manual but ford started using that around 94 or 95 in ALL of the manual mustangs. Ive had 7 mustangs and I have a 2001 Cobra now. Do not use 90W gear oil.....What kind of gear oil/transmission fluid would a manual transmission in a 2000 mustang 3.8L take?
actually, ford started doing this in the Ranger, using ATF in it, as early as 1988. their escorts used it as well, and the mustang went to it too.

eventually saturn started this as well, being thinner and lighter, it's easier to pour, cleaner and gets better mpg that way.

btw, it's NOT dexron as that is a GM product, it's Mercon V.What kind of gear oil/transmission fluid would a manual transmission in a 2000 mustang 3.8L take?
According to Mitchell OnDemand the vehicle takes MERCON automatic transmission fluid with a fill capacity of 5.6 pints.
USUALLY 90W,BUT GO TO THE PARTS STORE TELL THE CLERK YOU NEED GEAR OIL FOR A 2000 MUSTANG 3.8L WITH A 5,SPEED MANUAL TRANS,AND THEY WILL GIVE YOU THE CORRECT OIL......VERY SIMPLE
atf believe it or not. mustangs use aft regardless of being a stick or an auto.

What type of gear oil to put into my Mariner 2 stroke 40hp outboard. Is automotive gear oil ok to use?

Ive been told that automotive oil is ok and it is a lot cheaper once you change it once a yearWhat type of gear oil to put into my Mariner 2 stroke 40hp outboard. Is automotive gear oil ok to use?
Hypoid 90 marine gear oil would be best to be on the safe side, although I can't see why automotive transmission oil should do any harm. What type of gear oil to put into my Mariner 2 stroke 40hp outboard. Is automotive gear oil ok to use?
No! If your engine is a 2 stroke you have to use 2 stroke engine oil. 2 stroke engines burn oil, so if you did use automotive oil, which is designed for 4 stroke car engines, the engine would carbon up and it would still need to be replaced more than once a year because it will be burned the same.
It is best to get the two stroke marine oil.

How would you take the smell of gear oil out of a carpet you cant move, its in my car?

All of these answers so far address treating the area of the carpet on which the oil was spilt. Problem is the smell has already been absorbed into the remaining fabrics and finishes that comprise the vehicle's interior and using products that smell nice merely masks anything that is unpleasant, it doesn't necessarily remove it.

A subscriber to the Daily Telegraph Motoring Newsletter, submitted a piece about a year ago relating to much the same thing. Bizarre though it may seem, his solution was to place several cardboard trays of grass cuttings across the backseat. This he did for a couple of months, replacing each batch of cuttings when they started to decompose. At the end of the term the smell of the oil had disappeared along with all the other nasty smells that can accumulate as a car gets older.

I can attest to the validity of his claim because I took his advice to get rid of the smell of stale tobacco in my car. It really does work. Why I don't know but I'm sure a chemist could answer that question. What I do know is that after a couple of weeks the interior of the car smelled cleaner and fresher than I had ever known it.

I've tried to trace the piece that was written for you but it is apparently no longer available in an accessible archive. However, grass cuttings cost nothing and you have nothing to lose by giving it a try. I think you might be very surprised by the outcome. How would you take the smell of gear oil out of a carpet you cant move, its in my car?
    Simple Green.

Or you can take some oil absorbant granules (Kitty Litter) and brush it in really good into the carpet at the effected area, then vaccuum. How would you take the smell of gear oil out of a carpet you cant move, its in my car?
Two choices. 1 pour a small amt. of viniger on it, mop up with a towel. 2 Cover spot with baking soda, press into carpet, let set for a while, then vac.
Simple Green...it's the BOMB. Then, when the smell has been neutralized, use Febreeze for a nice, pleasant, not overpowering smell.
